I know emotions are running high right now, and my intention is not to minimize anyone's fear. Fires are incredibly stressful, and it's natural to have questions.

That said, if you're in or near the Dove Fire, please don't rely solely on Facebook comments to decide whether to evacuate or whether your home is safe. Social media can be helpful for community support, but official sources will always have the most accurate and timely information.

For your own safety and security, please avoid posting details like:
• Whether your home is currently vacant.
• That you're home alone or unable to evacuate.
• Your exact address or location.
• Whether your security cameras or alarm system are offline.
• Requests asking strangers to check if your house is still standing.

Unfortunately, not everyone online has good intentions, and it's best to protect your family and your property while emergency responders do their jobs.

If you need help evacuating because you're elderly, disabled, have no transportation, or have another emergency, don't post on Facebook and hope someone sees it. Contact the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office, your local emergency officials, or 911 if you're in immediate danger. They can coordinate assistance or direct you to the appropriate resources.

If you're trying to find out whether your home is in an evacuation zone or if it's safe to return, use official sources like Watch Duty, CAL FIRE, and Tuolumne County Office of Emergency Services, They are updated much faster and more accurately than social media.

If you're under an Evacuation Warning, get packed and be ready to leave. If you're under an Evacuation Order, leave immediately.

Let's continue supporting one another by sharing **verified information**, checking on neighbors when we safely can, and keeping emergency phone lines open for those whose lives depend on them.

Praying for everyone affected by the Dove Fire and for all of the firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, EMTs, and volunteers working around the clock to protect our community.

The Building and Safety Division of the Tuolumne County Community Development Department is happy to announce the implementation of a pre-approved plan program for the pre-approval of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADO) and Single Family Dwellings (SFD).

On the afternoon of July 26, 2026, when the Dove Fire was first reported to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) Dispatch Center, dispatchers also received several reports of a man wearing a straw hat running from the area where the fire started. Not long after, photos and videos of the man began circulating on social media.

The individual was later identified as a local transient, 30-year-old Jacob William Hoskins. Hoskins was recognized by members of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office and the Sonora Police Department in the social media imagery based on numerous prior law enforcement contacts.

A TCSO deputy initially contacted Hoskins; however, at that time there was insufficient probable cause to detain him. As the investigation progressed, a CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Law Enforcement Officer developed additional information, and a TCSO deputy obtained further investigative leads after speaking with one of Hoskins' associates. Using this information, the deputy located Hoskins at Rotary Park in Sonora, where he also found the same clothing, including the distinctive straw hat seen in the photos and videos from the time of the fire.

The deputy was assisted by personnel from the Sonora Police Department, and CAL FIRE law enforcement. Following the collaborative investigation conducted by the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office, the Sonora Police Department, and CAL FIRE law enforcement, Hoskins was arrested by CAL FIRE on suspicion of violating California Penal Code § 452(c) – Recklessly Causing a Fire.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office would like to thank our community. The vigilance of community members who promptly reported suspicious activity and captured photos and videos of Hoskins proved invaluable to the investigation and ultimately contributed to his identification and arrest.

The Dove Fire investigation remains under the jurisdiction of CAL FIRE, and any additional criminal charges or investigative updates will be released by CAL FIRE as appropriate.

⚠️ Fire Safety Reminder ⚠️

This photo was taken today in front of our store.

A cigarette butt was left on an old wooden structure and started to smolder. Thankfully, it was discovered and put out before it could become a larger fire.

As many of you know, Chinese Camp experienced a devastating fire last year, and our hotel was one of the buildings that was lost. Because of that experience, fire safety is something we take very seriously.

We are not trying to blame anyone. We simply want to remind everyone how quickly a fire can start from something as small as a cigarette butt.

Please help protect our community by making sure ci******es are completely extinguished and disposed of properly. During the dry season, one small spark can have devastating consequences.

Thank you for helping keep Chinese Camp safe and protecting our homes, businesses, history, and beautiful community. ❤️

Please do not throw cigarette butts on the ground or onto wooden structure
