Melinda's Market

Melinda's Market We connect our community to local, organically-grown food. Woman-owned and family-run. Welcome to Melinda's Market! My name is Melinda, and I LOVE good food.

Especially food that is good for you. I have a passion for farm-fresh, organic fruits and vegetables that has led to the creation of Melinda's Market. Our family moved from a cramped neighborhood in Garner to the slow-paced, wide-open-spaces of Clayton in 1998. And we haven't looked back since! We live on a secluded, wooded 20 acre piece of paradise with our two wild and free kiddos, a dog, a cat,

a flock of chickens, ducks, pigs and a goose. We couldn't have picked a better place to build our homestead and our family. The only drawback to living here is that it is so hard to find organic food. And if you do find it at the grocery store, it is way over-priced, looks terrible, and has traveled across the entire country to sit on the store shelf for way too long. Not exactly how I want to feed my very hungry family. After a summer of shopping at local farmer's markets and fruit stands, I became friends with some local organic farmers. I love talking to them and learning how their farms work, what their struggles are to make it work in Johnston County, and how they sell their produce. I was committed to helping each of these farms succeed because I want to eat their yummy veggies and I want them to be able to make a living doing what they love, farming organically and sustainably. I talked about veggies every chance I got with all my family and friends. I encouraged them to buy from the markets, but the honest feedback I got was that most busy moms just don't have the time to make it to the markets each Saturday morning with the kids in tow. I was determined to make it easier for them to get the same yummy organic produce my family was enjoying. That is when I decided to offer weekly veggie days each Wednesday for my friends and family. I coordinate with a bunch of different organic farms throughout this area. I am able to buy an amazing selection of organic fruits and veggies that are fresh-picked from the fields. Then on Wednesdays I pack everything up and deliver produce boxes in Clayton and some surrounding neighborhoods. If you are outside my delivery range, you are welcome to pick up after 2 PM on Wednesdays or by appointment. Thanks for buying local and supporting our family's little business and lots of local farms!

Look at this sweet little visitor that showed up on one of Jack's trail cams yesterday. We see tons of deer every day, but we don't get to see little spotted fawns very often. Pretty special!

SCHOOL'S OUT! PLEASE HELP US BY DONATING!
Now that school is on summer break, we've had an increase in the number of food-insecure families requesting assistance. And unfortunately we're also experiencing a decrease in donations that help fund this community service.

If you would like to help our family meet this need, we would greatly appreciate it. Here are a few ways to support us right now:

✨️Go to our website and click on the DONATE page where you can support a family with a produce box this Thursday.

✨️DONATE a dollar amount of your choosing that can be used throughout the summer months to cover families who do not have a sponsor that week. When school is out of session, kids are home all the time and don't get their breakfast and lunch provided at school. This is an especially difficult time for families dealing with food insecurity. Message me and we can set up a one-time payment to providefor these families.

✨️ORDER a regular produce box for your family (bonus points if you get some add-ons, especially fruit!). It's as simple as that. In years past, having enough regular orders has helped me provide a wider variety of fruits and veggies to food-insecure families we serve.

✨️Finally if you aren't in a place to donate or order, please SHARE this opportunity to help with your friends and family. I have heard from so many people who have donated in the past, that they appreciate being able to make an immediate impact on families in THEIR community.

Our family feels so fortunate to be able to connect families in our community with locally-grown, organic farm-fresh produce every Thursday. But it is a special privilege and a blessing to be able to help food-insecure families in our community by providing nutrient-dense, fresh produce for their weekly meals.

Your donation will be greatly appreciated by our family and the family who receives your produce. If you have any questions, please reach out. I want to make helping as easy as possible so we're able to serve all the families who request assistance.

Thanks for your support! Our family appreciates you! 💜💜💜

Livin' the high life with this Summer Fruit Salad last night. Not very often can I make such a yummy fruit salad using just produce harvested in the Carolinas.

While I'm sad to see the JoCo strawberry season come to a close this week, I'm still really happy we have a few more weeks with these blueberries and SC yellow peaches. So better get 'em while ya can!

I think it's safe to say y'all are loving these summer fruits and veggies as much as I am! With both peaches and sweet corn finally showing up on our menu, we had a really big veggie week. And that is such a good thing for our little business!

With lots of my weekly families traveling while their kids are out of school, summer has typically been a challenging season for Melinda's Market. Hopefully we'll keep this week's momentum going into summer and continue to have big veggie days.

So please keep us in mind when you're planning your summer meals. We would love to be a part of your weekly grocery list.

As always thank you for buying your family’s produce from our family! We appreciate you!

Such a great time to eat local when it's still cool enough for veggies like broccoli, but hot enough for sweet corn and summer squash. Love this time of year!

What's your favorite summer harvest?

Once temperatures get above 80°, my kitchen switches to cooling mode. I try to bake all our bread as soon as I wake up while the house hasn't started to heat up yet. I also try to make as many dinners as I can in my Instant Pot, so I can stay as comfortable as possible.

What changes do y'all make once it starts getting hot and humid? Or do you just tough it out? If you've got suggestions, let me hear it! I'm taking any and all tips on staying cool in the kitchen!

*Photo is my freshly-baked, long-fermented sourdough loaf on my custom walnut cutting board. My dad made this for me out of walnut boards that my father-in-law had milled when a walnut tree blew down in their years ago. It's a very special cutting board.

I can't stress enough just how important your support of our family's business is in this moment. We continue to have a lot on our plate as a family, and keeping my business going is more important than ever for me right now.

All I can do is say a huge thank you for buying your family’s produce from our family each and every week. You'll never know the tremendous impact you're making by shopping with us every Thursday.

I know a lot of local farms and small businesses are feeling anxious and uneasy right now. It's tough to stay optimistic in this economy. So if you're able, please shop local when the choice is there.

I can assure you the big retailers won't notice when you don't buy, but small businesses do! Just a few extra sales can be the difference between making it that week or closing their doors. So please stop lining the pockets of billionaires and start supporting local shops and family farms when possible.

You are not only keeping your hard earned money in our own community, you are quite literally paying the rent of small business owners, putting gas in their vehicles, making sure their lights stay on, paying their employees, keeping them going for another week, month, hopefully years.

Some of y'all are already ardent supporters of shopping local, and I absolutely love you for that! If you're new to shopping local, be prepared. For excellent customer service, exceptional quality, and sincere gratitude. Because local businesses appreciate your business!
