8:45 am Monday morning, temperature of 41 degrees and we had 3 minutes of HAIL. Small and pea sized, a bit softer than usual, not wind driven. Strawberries are covered so they are fine. But HAIL?! What next?

All this is growing right here on Mayfair Farm. Asparagus picking has really picked up with the too-warm weather. Strawberries are setting fruit, and we are planting something every day. You will find broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, spinach, greens, spring onions, sugar snap , carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes and more. We press our own unpasteurized apple cider, gather our own eggs, and make our own preserves from our fruits and berries. Plenty of from scratch baked goods and wildcaught Alaskan fish are available. We are always ready to answer any questions about our growing practices and how we farm. Find us each Saturday at 920 Hopewell Road in Clear Brook. Market hours are 9-1pm. Summer hours coming soon.

Here is your fruit update from Mayfair Farm. Strawberries were covered and they are fine. We are irrigating them due to lack of rain. Blueberries 2nd pic) are fine,as expected. Pears, third pic, are a mixed bag, with Asian pears faring better. There is a lot of variability, and I anticipate continued fruit drop, due to lingering damage. Plums,in the last picture, are showing a wide range, from severe to expecting a need for thinning. Each variety was at a different stage of development, and has differing frost tolerance. That’s why Gene diversified EVERYTHING he planted. There are a few apricots and some tart cherries are just starting to bloom. So, it is not as much as we hoped for, but it is what it is. See you on Saturday at 920 Hopewell Road in Clear Brook, 9-1pm.

It’s a strange year! We will have some freshly picked ASPARAGUS on Saturday, but the rhubarb is not ready yet. I have never picked asparagus before rhubarb before. Next week the asparagus will really be coming in. Sugar snap peas, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, green onions, other greens, and root vegetables are still plentiful. The first green beans are up, other vegetables are being planted, and the strawberries and blueberries are blooming. We will post a tree fruit update after checking the blossoms this weekend. Remember that we grow 100% of the fruits and vegetables we sell, as we try to bring you the best from our farms. Find it all at 920 Hopewell Road in Clear Brook where Mayfair Farm and Cline’s Farm are doing it better together. Open Saturdays, 9-1pm.

Guess who is eating fresh ASPARAGUS tomorrow night for dinner? I have never picked any this early before. This is about 2 weeks earlier than our previous season start. Miguel says it was right beside our mushroom compost and mulch pile. He theorized that the heat given off from them pushed the asparagus to an earlier maturity date.

Just letting you know we just received a new shipment of WILDCAUGHT ALASKAN KING SALMON from my brother Jim in Alaska. All fish caught in Alaska is wildcaught, because Alaska banned fish farming in its waters when it became a state in 1959. Their fisheries resource is sustainably managed to ensure its continued health and prosperity. This means that sometimes a certain fishery will be reduced or even closed, to protect and grow its stock. This has happened with the King Salmon fishery. We will not have as much available this year, so enjoy it when you can. See you at the market at 920 Hopewell Road in Clear Brook on Saturday, 9-1pm.
