It was a very hot, humid, but productive day so I thought I’d post some progress pics. Try to give everyone a peek at what we are doing this year! I apologize for the boring info dump but for the few that want to know….

I will say I did get a little later start this year than prior years due to the construction and destruction projects. But we now have more melon patches and they were a big hit last year. So far we’ve planted Sugar Baby, Hales Best Jumbo, Crimson Sweet,and Honey Dew Swan Mass.

I’m proud to say that we are going to end up with about 140 tomato plants growing this year. All varieties being Cherokee Purple, San Marzano, Jetstar, Celebrity, Red Deuce, Parks Whopper, Big Boy, Better Boy, Big Beef. Then the cherry tomatoes being Husky Cherry Red, Super Sweet 100, Sun Sugar Gold, Black Cherry.

Strangely enough I’m really into heirloom beans right now. Mainly ones popular in the late 1800’s. I planted 23 different varieties last year but most didn’t do well with the heavy moisture in the early season. I ate what I did get and really liked them. This year I calmed down and planted less. Varieties this year are Dragon Tongue, Jade, Slenderette Bush, October Bush, Turtle Black, Good Mother Stallard, Ollie Gobble, Cherokee Cornfield Snap, CTT Black, Poor Man’s Cutshort, and Barnes Mountain.

I do plan on planting some New England Sugar Pie pumpkins on the tunnel this year. They are supposed to be good for roasting.

Youth ages 9–18 (as of January 1, 2026) are invited to join us for hands-on horticulture learning and fun!

📅 Dates: May 12–14, 2026
⏰ Time: 3:00–5:00 PM
📍 Locations: Hickman County Extension Office, Golden Gardens, & Watson Home

Participants will:
✔️ Learn about plants and gardening
✔️ Grow and care for horticulture projects
✔️ Create entries for the 4-H Fair

🌼 Goal: Make a fair project (or even 3!) to enter in 4-H Rally Days this summer

Asparagus for one, maybe and some extra eggs! All eggs are unwashed and from the past few days. Please be considerate when getting them maybe half a dozen or dozen per family so we can reach as many people as possible. This is always the goal. Bring your own container or there are bags on the stand come get what you need.

Even though I was raised on a farm I’ve never had to catch, hold, and walk with a full grown duck before today! Lucky for this little abandoned, starving duck there happened to be a vacant freshly renovated chicken house right up the road. Not a moment too soon before the storm and then the cold.

Finished the inside of the chicken shack this week! I still have to install the automatic door and some gates and wire to the outside pin but we are definitely closing in on the end! Just wanting everything ready and warmer weather before we attempt this adventure.
