Since 1968, Stansell's has been a homegrown and home owned grocery store. From the time when O.C. 'Pete' Stansell owned and ran the store to when his nephews, Randy and Lindy Stansell took over, Stansell's has been a part of Clovis and the surrounding community. It's no secret that the most popular part of Stansell's was the meat market. Folks would come for miles for the slow cooked brisket, bean
s, and other items such as the rotisserie chicken, carne adovada, chicken salad, ham salad, hand trimmed steaks, and meat packs. In 2014, Randy and Lindy announced their retirement and closure of Stansell's Thriftway at its longtime location in the Highland Shopping Center. What came afterwards was a sentiment seen all too often in small towns when a business would close its doors. They missed the opportunity to talk to local folks and get the help they needed. They missed getting their groceries at Stansell's. They especially missed the meat market. Two of the long-time employees at Stansell's decided to do something about it after enjoying a "semi-retirement". John "Butch" Jouett has been in the grocery business for well over 40 years. He has worked for Stansell's as well as other grocery stores such as Piggly Wiggly in Clovis and Amarillo as well as Albertson's in Amarillo. When Stansell's closed their doors, John's most recent tenure with Stansell's was over 28 years. David Madrid has been a butcher for over 30 years. David has also worked as a district manager at B&R Thriftway and Ron's Meat Market in Mammoth, Arizona. Both John and David devised a business plan and began talking to the right folks in order to open up a local meat market. When deciding on a name, it was only natural to name the business after Stansell's as that was the name people came to know and trust. The Stansell's brothers provided their blessing to use the name and the final plans were developed to open Stansell's Meat Market at 700 N. Thornton in Clovis. Stop by and order your beef, chicken, or pork exactly the way you want it. Call in an order of brisket for your next family gathering or any other occasion. Support your local meat market.
