🌿 Perilla — AKA Shiso, Beefsteak Plant, Korean Sesame Leaf, Purple Mint, & Chinese Basil!

If you’ve seen this beauty at the market and wondered what to do with it, the answer is: almost everything!

Not all perilla is the same (The video is the Green variety)—here is the breakdown on the two types you’ll see:

💚 Green Perilla (Korean Kkaennip):

The Flavor: Bright, herbal, and slightly nutty with a hint of mint.
Best For: Fresh wraps for barbecue and rice, summer salads, stir-fries, or pickled in soy sauce and garlic for a classic savory side.

💜 Purple Perilla (Red Shiso):

The Flavor: Deep, complex, and intensely aromatic with notes of cinnamon, clove, and sweet anise/licorice.
Best For: Making vibrant pink syrups, teas, pickling, and adding bold culinary flair to gourmet dishes.
