Coastal Land Trust transferred ownership to Windsor, where it will be turned into a public park.
Historically, the site was the first Bertie County seat (circa 1722 to 1769), known as the "Lost Town of Cashy" where a courthouse, jail, and other buildings were located.
The Coastal Land Trust is excited to announce that another coastal treasure has been protected! In partnership with the Town of Windsor, the 313-acre Hoggard’s Millpond property in Bertie County is now permanently conserved!
The Coastal Land Trust purchased the property in December and transferred ownership to the Town of Windsor, where it will be transformed into a public nature and historic park. The Town plans to designate approximately 28 acres for amenities, with the remaining land preserved under conservation restrictions, protecting the property's natural, historic, and cultural features. And there are many!
Historically, the site was the first Bertie County seat (circa 1722 to 1769), known as the "Lost Town of Cashy" where a courthouse, jail, and other buildings were located.
The property also provides crucial habitat for fish and wildlife, is critical for flood control purposes, and helps maintain the water quality of Hoggard’s Mill Run (also known as Hoggard’s Mill), the largest tributary of the Cashie River.
After years of dedicated effort and collaboration with the Town of Windsor and the Thompson family, we are proud to have secured the permanent protection of this treasured landscape! Read the full announcement here: www.coastallandtrust.org/hoggards-millpond-protected
