Time for one of my favorite things ... seedling starts!
We have begun:
Anise (Pimpinella Anisum)
Bishop's Flower
Bergamot
Calendula
Cape forget me not
Johnny jump up
White Yarrow
Anise is great for attracting beneficial insects, supporting pollinators like bees and butterflies, and repelling pests such as aphids and deer.
Bishop's Flower (Ammi Majus) also known as false Queen Anne's Lace. Attracts pollinators like bees and beneficial insects (ladybugs and lacewings). Manages pests like aphids and caterpillars. Typically deer and rabbit resistant. These can last 10 days in a cut flower arrangement.
Bergamot (Monardo Didyma or scarlet bee balm) A pollinator magnet that is fragrant and deer resistant. Draws in hummingbirds, butterflies and native bees. Leaves and flowers are edible. The dried seed heads provide food for birds while the hollow stems offer nesting sites for native bees.
Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) acts as a trap crop due to the sticky resin on calendula stems that attract aphids, whiteflies and thrips, Attracts beneficial insects such as bees, ladybugs and butterflies. Their taproot helps loosen soil. The edible petals can be used in salads as well as having antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Cape Forget Me Not (Anchusa capensis) Pollinator support, Deer Resistant, hardy with cobalt blue flowers.
Johnny Jump Up 4-10 inch self seeding plants provide early nectar for bees and offer edible flowers for salads. They are attractive to bees, butterflies and beneficial syrphid flies.
White Yarrow Drought tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant and attracts pollinators like butterflies and bees. Long lasting cut or dried. he deep roots help improve soil quality and is a beneficial addition to compost. Good for erosion control on slopes.
