The role of lime in the history of navigation
In the 17th and 18th centuries, a particular danger for sailors was scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. Since then, lime has always been carried on British ships and has played a role in Britain's maritime achievements. Moreover, English sailors even began to be called “Limeys”.
