☀️ THE "OTHER" CORONADO! ☀️
Our island's population gets a wonderful boost every summer from our neighbors to the east who are trading the triple-digit desert temperatures for our cool ocean breezes.
If you live in Arizona, "Coronado" means a massive national forest, a mountain trail or a trendy Phoenix neighborhood. But if you’re standing on our beach, it’s a whole different vibe.
Here is the real tea on how we both got our names:
🏜️ Arizona’s Version: Named after the 16th-century Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, who spent years wandering the desert looking for mythical cities of gold. (Spoiler: He didn't find the gold, but he did get a lot of stuff named after him).
👑 Our Version: Pure aesthetics. In 1602, an explorer saw some islands off the coast, thought "hey, those look like crowns," and called them Las Yslas Coronadas. Fast forward to 1886: developers tried to name our town "Miramar." Locals hated it and stole the islands' name instead.
So while Arizona is named after a dude who got lost looking for treasure, California's Coronado was named because we just wanted to look fancy. 💅
