Home food production has always been important for community and household food security, but it’s been especially essential during times of widespread hardship. During World Wars I and II, the U.S. government encouraged families to plant Victory Gardens, preserve storage crops, raise chickens, and curb food waste to alleviate pressure on a strained food system.
