Well we are absolutely humbled by the response to our upcoming Farm to Table Dinner in partnership with and . Our community showed out, and we sold out of tickets within 36 hours...before we even got to share the details fully. We truly wish we could accommodate everyone who wanted to come - but the truth is that we would not all fit in the barn!

Ben and I (Bree) have dreamed of this event for a long time. Mayan Cafe has been our steadfast wholesale partner for over a decade, they have seen us through many ups and downs, and lots of growth. Mayan Cafe and West End Gin get it, they get us, they lead with heart, values, and an unwavering commitment to building community through food and hospitality. We are so honored they said yes to this event. We will just have to another one soon!

Get to Know Your Farmers!: Oscar

Oscar has worked here at Rootbound for 8 years. He has had all jobs here, but now primarily works in the pack shed, where his duties include (but are not limited to) washing and packing produce and eggs for our CSA and wholesale clients. Oscar lives in Bahía de Banderas, in Nayarit, Mexico, with his wife and 2 kids. He travels to Kentucky to work at Rootbound Farm during the peak 8 months out of the year. His son, 15, and his daughter, 9, both play soccer. When he is at home, Oscar likes to spend time with his family and watch movies together. His favorite series is Game of Thrones.

📢🐔 The big news around the farm is that the pullets (teenage female chickens) are laying eggs!

This younger group of hens will eventually replace our older hens that are now almost 2 years old. Stay tuned for our announcements later this summer if you’re looking for a few trusty and sophisticated hens for your backyard flock!

Chickens provide a critical ecological function for the health of the soil and the land. Rootbound laying hens live their lives outdoors in our mobile chicken coops where they are able to graze and hunt for grubs, worms, beetles, and bugs. They are also fed a diet of Certified Organic grains. Their mobile coop and electrically fenced yard is moved 3 times per week. This movement of their grazing area allows them constant access to fresh foraging and it allows us to evenly distribute their manure around the farm to build more soil fertility. Those bright yellow yolks are a result of their diverse diet full of nutrients and minerals.

We are constantly challenging ourselves to push the limits of our knowledge and our creativity in our goal to produce sustainable healthy food on our farm. We are enjoying and appreciating the contributions poultry are making to the health of our farm and, we hope, to the health of your families.

Sweet corn is heading to the CSA and our farmers markets this weekend Douglass Loop Farmers Market, St. Matthews Farmers Market, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, La Grange Farmers' Market & Artisans, and Hyde Park Farmers' Market .

“Knee High by the 4th of July…” was the adage we used to use to gauge the success of our corn crop. So harvesting by June 25th is, for us, a major achievement and it's not one that happened by chance. Sweet corn seeds are usually planted directly into the soil but these sweet corn seeds were started in the greenhouse way back at the end of March. We planted them 2 weeks later and covered them with hoops and frost blankets until late April and we’ve carefully tended them since.

Good sweet corn is delicious, sugary sweet and full of flavor. Everyone wants to eat it….that includes us, bugs raccoons, you name it. The corn earworm is the most common bug and it is usually concentrated in the top 1-2 inches. Just chop that part off and toss it in the compost, and enjoy!

Eating local and organic doesn’t always require a tradeoff in aesthetic quality but with sweet corn it is hard to compete with a product pumped up with synthetic nitrogen, genetically modified to resist pests, and soaked in neurotoxins to kill any that slip through. Where you won’t notice any tradeoffs is in freshness, taste, wow factor, or nutritional quality. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much has we’ve enjoyed growing it for you!
