🌱 What is a cover crop… and why do we plant them on our farm?
A cover crop is a plant we grow not to harvest but to protect and feed the soil between our main growing seasons. It’s gives the land a break and a nutrient boost at the same time.
On our farm we rely on three powerhouses:
Sunn h**p, cowpea, and Sudan grass.
Here’s why they matter:
✅ Build real soil health -
Their roots loosen the ground, feed soil life, and add organic matter as they break down. Healthier soil = stronger vegetables.
✅ Naturally cut back on synthetic fertilizers -
Sunn h**p and cowpea are legumes that pull nitrogen from the air and put it into the soil. Sudan grass uses very little nutrients to build loads of biomass. Together they reduce our need for bagged fertilizers.
✅ Protect against erosion & weeds -
They hold the soil in place during the rainy season and outcompete weeds. They reduce our need to till or use herbicide, naturally protecting our soils microbiome.
✅ Boost biodiversity -
These crops create habitat for earthworms, beneficial insects, and pollinators. A thriving farm starts with a thriving ecosystem.
✅ Bonuses from nature’s multitaskers -
Sunn h**p grows incredibly fast and helps suppress harmful nematodes as it breakdown. Sudan grass’s deep roots break up soil compaction to make it easier for next seasons crop roots to grow and thrive.
Cover crops are one of the simplest and most powerful tools we use to grow better food. They help us care for the land that feeds us in a naturally sustainable way.
