Have y’all got a shortage of lightning bugs this year? I’ve noticed when I’m babysitting hens from the evil owls, that we don’t have near as many lightning bugs this year. I didn’t realize when I filmed this bug that it is being eaten by a spider! We’ll see you Saturday at Farmers Market of the Ozarks!

Is Tom a crop farmer too? No, it’s just a hobby, he just likes to see field corn growing. Is he going to feed his corn crop to his hogs? Rumor has it that he’s going to produce his own organic high fructose corn syrup and make his own version of Dr. Pepper. He apparently has a lot of free time in retirement!

I’m glad I hadn’t torched the old barn debris yet. I found a couple of roto bales of lespedeza that would have been baled no later than 1969 in what’s now the bottom of Stockton Lake! To commemorate the occasion, I even used a hay hook to handle it. Look up Allis Chalmers Roto Baler on YouTube to see how they were made. Roto bales were ancestors of today’s big round bales. Ah, the good old days!

Another incredible sunset over our farm yesterday. It’s hard to believe as cool as it’s been that Johnson grass would be headed out already.

Incredible thunderhead against a beautiful blue sky yesterday. That would be rain east of us. We received more rain in overnight thunderstorms to take us to almost 7 inches so far this month. Every rain in June and abundant forages pushes dry weather concerns further into late Summer.

We are brush hogging! No farmers market for us today. We have been shredding pastures after we rotate the cattle on to the next paddock. With all the rain and moderate temperatures, we are seeing all forages rebounding. This will make for excellent quality pasture in a month. We’ll see y’all at Farmers Market of the Ozarks next Saturday!

Here’s an update on our new pigs. They adapted to our hog floor immediately and taken off growing! They have jumped on feed that I just put in the feeder. They will be available for your freezer in November. Your own Christmas ham!

Today we finally removed most of the plastic walls from the chicken tractors. In this up and down rainy weather, the birds needed the plastic for weather protection. Well, the birds are bigger now and can handle more cool wet conditions, if it happens. This afternoon is hot and humid and with shade, wind and water, the birds are fine.

We had a gully washer this morning! 4.01 inches. We’re on the way to the big spring to check the flow. When we get there, Stockton Lake is about 1/4 mile downstream and the water begins on the right at the spring. I could listen all day to this!
