There is one bright spot: Fruit juice offers some nutrients. Studies show drinking no more than five ounces a day is linked to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. 1 large ripe banana
500 ml almond milk
1 teaspoon almond essence , optional
4 ripe passion fruit

Method
Peel the banana and place in a blender with the almond milk and almond essence (if using).
Halve the passion fruit, then scrape most of the pulp into the blender and blitz to combine.
Serve in tall glasses, over ice if you like, with the remaining passion fruit pulp spooned over the top.

6 green cardamom pods , optional
2 ripe mangos
500 g low-fat natural yoghurt
100 g ice cubes
runny honey , optional

Method
Crush the cardamom pods in a pestle and mortar (if using) and discard the green husks. Bash the seeds to a fine powder and set aside.
Cut the juicy flesh off the mangos (the riper they are, the better), leaving the stone in the middle and trimming away all the skin.
Place the mango flesh and any juices into a blander with the yoghurt, ice cubes, 1 tablespoon of honey and the ground cardamom (if using).
Blitz until smooth, have a taste, and add a little more honey, if needed. Serve immediately.

Ingredients
1 banana
2 ripe mangos
400 g tin of light coconut milk
1 lime , zest and juice of
1 pinch of cardamom seeds , pods and husks removed, seeds pounded
1 handful of ice cubes
GARNISH
lime zest
freshly ground black pepper

Method
Peel the banana and roughly chop it.
Skin the mangos, remove the stones and roughly chop the flesh.
Put the fruit in a food processor or liquidizer and blend together with the rest of the ingredients. Make sure you blend the mixture really well, then pour the fruit smoothie into a tall, chilled glass.

FOR THE GREEN SMOOTHIE
1 banana
200 g baby spinach
250 ml fresh apple juice
1 lime
FOR THE PURPLE SMOOTHIE
2 pears
150 g frozen blueberries
100 ml fresh apple juice
FOR THE ORANGE SMOOTHIE
2 cm piece of ginger
1 carrot
200g frozen mango
200 ml fresh orange juice
1 lime
FOR THE WHITE SMOOTHIE
1 banana
3 tablespoons ground almonds
250 ml milk
runny honey , to taste

Method
FOR THE GREEN SMOOTHIE
1. Peel the banana and cut into nice big slices on a chopping board – ideally you want to use frozen bananas, so try to remember to do this the day before.
2. Put the banana and spinach in a blender and pour in the apple juice.
3. Cut the lime in half and squeeze all the lime juice into the blender.
4. Secure the lid and blitz until smooth, then serve.

FOR THE PURPLE SMOOTHIE
1. Remove the stalks from the pears, then use a knife to cut into quarters, removing and discarding the cores.
2. Put the pears and blueberries in a blender, then pour in the apple juice.
3. Secure the lid and blitz until smooth, then serve.

FOR THE ORANGE SMOOTHIE
1. Use a teaspoon to scrape all the skin off the ginger, then finely grate onto a board using a microplane.
2. Peel the carrot, then trim and roughly chop it.
3. Put the ginger, carrot and frozen mango in a blender, then pour in the orange juice.
4. Cut the lime in half and squeeze all the lime juice into the blender.
5. Secure the lid and blitz until smooth, then serve.

2 pears
6 cardamom pods
500 ml oat milk
100 g natural yoghurt
2 teaspoons runny honey
2 teaspoons bee pollen

Method
The night before you want to make your smoothie, peel and core the pears. Pop them into the freezer.
Open the cardamom pods and extract the seeds, then crush up in a pestle and mortar.
Tip the crushed seeds into a blender, then add the frozen pears, oat milk, yoghurt and honey. Blitz until smooth.
Divide between two glasses and sprinkle over the bee pollen.
