Maple Syrup makers far and wide share a common question as maple syrup season approaches: “Are you tapped yet?” Maple syrup season does not follow a date on the calendar, but rather the temperatures and weather patterns. Sap will flow from the tree when temperatures are below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Sunny days make for an especially great run!

Tapping: the act of gently ”tapping” the spials into place to allow the sap to flow into and through the spials, down the tubing, and into our gathering pails. If Grampy’s holes are low enough, all workers can be “tappers”.

This is our Sweet Sap Maple Syrup Manager, Mike. He also answers to Dad and Grampy. Here he is drilling holes to place taps. This tree received three spials. In the fall, before leaves drop, we marked virgin trees that we would like to tap in the late winter. Those colorful maple 🍁 markings help all of our grandchildren spot the correct trees for their pail and tubing deliveries!
