think little is more than just a farm name. its the idea that making big, sustainable changes requires us to work small, in our communities, with people who share our space and our resources, and find those who, like us, care about the planet and about where good food comes from.

as such, think little farm is jazzed to launch our community compost program. local folks can sign up to get a bucket in which they’ll put their food scraps and compostable stuff, i’ll pick it up twice a month, and i’ll use it to make nutritious, delicious compost to feed our think little farm soil.

local food waste belongs on local food producing farms. we will keep food waste out of landfills, make sure our soil gets fed, and grow the best quality produce for you.

i don’t get to do this (tilling) much. i am committed to running at the least a low till farm (i got yer back, soul microbes). but, when it comes to opening up new ground for planting, a one time tillage is spectacular. do it once so you never have to do it again.

24’x100’ garlic/winter squash plot.

small scale, ecological, biodiverse agriculture for the damn win, folks. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻❤️❤️❤️

generally, i don’t love starting beds with cardboard and compost (aka no dig or deep compost mulching), but it is a quick way to open up some space, and sometimes a man needs a spot to grow some tomatoes because i am officially 80% made of BLTs.

as a farmer (and it’s worth noting that i still get chills when i call myself a farmer by profession) it’s my job to take care of the land. so much of my brain energy lately has been spent thinking about my soil, how i will orient my beds, which cultivars of which crops i’ll get as seeds, etc.

but tonight, as i rushed to mow a field before 4 days of thunderstorms ahead, i was really struck by how grateful i am to be able to practice a sort of ecological reciprocity here in kentucky towards creatures.

the red winged blackbird, its nests, the ladybugs in a crop of bitter dock, some mice, a snake, a turkey. these things are begging us, as humans, to show them a kindness. a kindness that they return to us by bringing us joy and maintaining a sense of balance and wonder and love in our world.

i guess what im saying is that perhaps one of the most beautiful things we can do as humans is to show empathy towards creatures and the way they live. empathy and love towards creatures is a way of showing respect to our planet and a means by which we can protect it.

anyway…thoughts while mowing by farmer mike, i guess. rip on, my friends!!!
