Saturday Night Field Tour. Blessed to catch a dry slot to catch up on cultivating (forecast midweek looks wet again); September beets; had to turn the butternut vines away which have filled in the empty shoulder bed and have a notion to keep going South.

This little block was planted July 15th, lettuce, basil, scallions, and beets.
Early winter squash already featuring powdery mildew; delicata for late August.

We don’t plant heaps of winter squash; this year - two successions, 6 beds each. One looking west and the younger looking east.

Next week’s lettuce beds filling in; though the Muir & Purple Fusion still have a week or so to finish sizing. We’ll start with the Panisse, Starfighter, and Magenta heads and exercise patience waiting for Muir to return to the rotation. Mt Magic tomatoes waiting on a Sunday stringing in the background.

Reckon tonight’s storms will easily carry us over 10 inches since our pattern shift ~2 weeks ago. Definitely one of the wettest stretches during high summer we’ve experienced in a long while. Great for transplant establishment. Tough for work/life balance when Mother Nature gives you small planting and cultivation windows. Through it all we are mostly on top of both weeds and transplants… a few forced gaps ahead as we decided which crops to prioritize planting after the July 4th heat wave. And, likely a few crops that might battle disease pressure which accompanies the wet.

Sunday Morning Lettuce Harvest Rd. 1 featuring young Green Forest Romaine from Lettuce Succession #8 (seeded in the gh 5/14, tp 6/11) and Magenta Summer Crisp from succession #7 (seeded 5/07, tp 5/29). We are just finishing the last Magenta & Muir heads from #7, succession #8 includes Magenta, Panisse, and Purple Fusion in addition to the romaine.

Successions #9, 10, & 11 are thriving in the fields…number 12 is ready to transplant, 13 & 14 & 15 are growing in the greenhouse, number 16 will be seeded this week, and we’ll seed up to 20 or 21 successions this season. Just now shifting to a couple downy mildew resistant varieties with this week’s seeding - Ruby Sky & Shirane Sky - neither are particularly bolt resistant, so don’t enter the rotation until late summer seedings.

High summer rotation focuses on heat tolerant summer crisps, fast growing Starfighter, alongside crowd favorite Panisse.

Almost more exciting than tomatoes tbh - Expression & Tropea at the stand this afternoon and Sunday morning. Onions will slowly work into harvest rotation through the end of July and then be available consistently into the early fall. yum. yum.
