We introduced Cooper in 2024 after decades of hitching our wagon to the incredible indelible tomato, a plant that is very happy here in Northern California, just like us. In the 70s and 80s we hosted an annual tomato festival and decided to permanently honor the botanical fruit in 2000 with an installation on the patio. Today, half a dozen Yolo County farms bring us tomatoes every summer. And truuuust you won’t find tomatoes in Davis! Cooper, our tomato mascot, represents the network of local farms, businesses, organizations, and people we work with that make up our local food system. We exist to support this system and so the people of Davis have access to quality food produced by local people who care about what happens to our community and our planet.

Meet Yolo Press, a longtime local farm that we have carried at the Co-op for more than 30 years! 🫒🌿

Yolo Press is an organic farm run entirely by the Madison family. Located in Winters, CA, they have been crafting small-batch olive oil since 1991. Their 1,700 trees— spanning 16 varieties from Italy, Greece, Spain, and California— produce high-quality oil, cold-pressed on-site for peak freshness. They also create handcrafted olive oil soaps, blending sustainability with artistry.

Their olive oil can be found in our Produce Department, and their body care products are on Aisle 8!

📍The Cheese Counter at the Davis Food Co-op is the best place to discover incredible specialty items! Everything is hand selected by LaShundra, the Co-op’s Cheesemonger. The counter is organized by region and cheese style and most everything is cut by hand so the cheese specialists can cut you a smaller or bigger piece if you need. And they’re happy to sample anything you’d like to try. Look for the bin of cheese bits that cost around $1-3! Cheese bits are great for a picnic, a snack, or trying something new. We also stock gourmet plant-based cheeses. You can never go wrong at the Cheese Counter!

For September's Round Up at the Registers, we’re supporting the Davis Schools Foundation, a nonprofit that supports student well-being and educational opportunities in the Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD). Through partnerships with families, educators, and community members, the foundation provides grants that fund programs and services beyond what public funding can support. Its funding priorities include mental health and counseling services, equitable access to educational resources, and providing educators with the tools needed to create safe, supportive, and effective learning environments.

Farm 🍇 to shelf 🍷

This wine traveled 2.1 miles from Great Bear Vineyards to get to the co-op. But can you taste the local difference? Yes, absolutely! These wines have never been stuck on a cargo ship or in a hot warehouse. Which is good, because winemaker Jenny, along with her family, spend a lot of time crafting intentional, slow wines grown in harmony with nature. The team produces a delicious and impressive variety of wines from the farm along with olive oil. Like wine, olive oil can lose its flavor during long, hot hauls and warehouse stays. Avoid this! Shop local! We have a wonderful community because people like Jenny and Marcus continue to invent so much of their heart and soul into it.

If you’re grilling this summer, Marcus recommends anything aged in American Oak 🍷 cheers!
