Our Story

I was blessed with a Grandpa that loved to garden. He was a solid presence in my life, sharing with me the values of life as well as gardening. I would spend the night on the weekends with my grandparents and in the summer the garden was a place we would go to first thing in the morning after a delicious breakfast made by my Grandma. Though I don’t think I paid that much attention to the details he taught (much to my chagrin these days) it was something that became ingrained in my life. I still think often of my times with him when I am in the garden.

I met my husband at work and we became fast friends. I knew I would marry him almost immediately because of our love of nature, food, children, animals, etc. I knew he was my perfect match. I married into a gardening family....he too was a gardener and it is something we have always done together. When we would travel, we would both be excited by the gardens we saw wherever we went, especially the truck gardens for me. I remember telling him how much I would love to be a truck gardener. He would smile and nod, taking in my lofty dream as we were not living on a farm and knowing it was never going to be.

Two winters ago, I was bored and was cruising through YouTube and found a gardener that was gardening on other peoples property and selling his products. I got really excited about it and thought that we could do that! My husband was nearing retirement and we don’t necessarily want to be sitting around doing nothing, so I mentioned it to him. I gave him my spiel expecting a mild form of disagreement, telling me it was not practical. I had told him that the Blue Mountain Station was looking for a gardener and to my amazement he excitedly said, “Let’s do it!” I was gobsmacked that he agreed without any hesitation. So....here we are. Growing veg, preparing to retire, and sharing our gift of growing food for your family and ours. We love what we are doing and we are very thankful for the local food movement. It has given us a direction in our golden years that we both love and want to be able to for our community and share with our grandchildren.
