150th Anniversary, Vintage Base Ball Games – Lead vs. Deadwood June 14, 2026 and July 5, 2026

Happy Wednesday everyone! 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Coincidentally, this year also commemorates the 150th anniversary (or sesquicentennial) of the founding of the communities of Deadwood and Lead. To honor this occasion, both communities have partnered on planning a series of projects and events throughout the year.

The idea of hosting a vintage base ball game began in 2013 with the research and development of four outdoor interpretive panels located at Keene Memorial Baseball Field in Deadwood. All through this time, staff occasionally joked about establishing a public exposition on how early baseball was once played in the mining camps. Ironically, it took a sesquicentennial celebration to bring this to fruition.

To honor this occasion, it was discussed and agreed upon to bring back the friendly rivalry between the communities of Deadwood and Lead. The players that make up this organization are represented by the Mayors of Deadwood and Lead and the Central City Town Board President. The remaining team players are all members of the various northern Black Hills communities. We certainly hope that you enjoy this stroll down memory lane!

Congratulations on your retirement, Chris Sherrard! 👋

Chris Creations joined the Market in our very first year, and her booth quickly became a weekly staple for so many of us. From home-canned goods and freeze-dried specialties to fresh seasonal produce, Chris always brought something special to market day. She will be greatly missed!

I just checked my pantry and realized I only have ONE jar of her famous Cowboy Candy pickled peppers left 😯

We wish Chris a happy, well-deserved retirement and thank her for being such an important part of our Market family over the years.

And now… we know there are some big shoes to fill! If you know someone who makes amazing home-canned goods, preserves, pickles, jams, or similar specialties and is looking for a market hungry for those products, tell them to give us a call!

BREAKING NEWS…
The Deadwood Friday Farmers Market has been awarded a $10,000 Capacity Building Grant from the Black Hills Area Community Foundation.

We are incredibly honored and grateful for this investment in the future of the Market and its community partnerships.

What began just three years ago with eight vendors has grown into a vibrant weekly gathering featuring local farmers, bakers, makers, artists, and small businesses from across the Black Hills region.

A key part of that growth has been our Community Spotlight Program, which welcomes local nonprofits, civic organizations, public safety agencies, and community groups into the Market each week to share information, connect with the public, and strengthen community relationships.

This grant will help support the long-term sustainability of the Market through strategic planning, improved operational systems, technology upgrades, board development, and expanded sponsorship and donor engagement tools.

Most importantly, this investment will help ensure the Market continues to grow thoughtfully while supporting local small businesses, strengthening community partnerships, and creating a welcoming gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Thank you to the Black Hills Area Community Foundation, our vendors, volunteers, sponsors, Spotlight partners, and everyone who supports the Friday Market each season in Gordon Park.
