Peace out Cher

The feed bill got just a smidgeon smaller this morning. As a responsible breeder, there are always those animals that just don’t fit into our program that we need to send down the road….most were due to not having gotten bred last fall (not for lack of trying) for their second year in a row. Unless something goes horribly wrong, we give our does 2 breeding years to get settled, if you don’t breed by the end of the second year, you don’t stay.

How much better could this industry be if more people remembered what this was really supposed to be about?

Because yes, we all want to win.
We want the banners.
The buckles.
The backdrop pictures.
The validation that the hard work paid off.

But at the end of the day, the greatest thing this industry produces was never meant to be livestock.

It’s people.

Young people who learn responsibility before most adults do.
Who learn how to lose gracefully.
How to work when they’re tired.
How to care for something besides themselves.
How to shake hands.
How to be humble.
How to keep showing up.

And the truth is, if we sacrifice those things in the pursuit of winning… then we missed the point completely.

The best stock show families aren’t just building champions in the ring. They’re building good humans outside of it too. 💙

There are two types of names…
The ones that sound good on paper
…and the ones you can yell across the barn 😅

If you know, you know.

👇 Drop your project’s name in the comments. Bonus points if we can hear you yelling it.

🐣 Our Go-To Chick Hatching Setup (Farm Approved!) 🐔✨

We get asked a lot what we use for hatching chicks, so here’s a quick list of our favorite, tried-and-true items we use here on the farm 👇

🥚 Incubator (our main setup)
MATICOOPX 30 Egg Incubator
https://a.co/d/06gPkdPX

🔦 Candling (a MUST for hatch success)
Magicfly Egg Candler
https://a.co/d/002UgLo6

🐥 Chick Identification
Baby Chick Leg Bands

🏡 Brooder Setup (post-hatch lifesaver)
RentACoop Big Red Barn Chick Brooder Set
https://a.co/d/05nuNLt7

🧺 Brooder Upgrade (highly recommend)
RentACoop Jute Brooder Liners for Big Red Barn
https://a.co/d/01HsPjRQ

💡 A few extras we recommend:

Thermometer + hygrometer (backup readings are HUGE)
https://a.co/d/0hFL0U2e

Electrolytes/vitamins for chicks (great for the first few days)

‐--------------------------------

Hatching chicks is one of the most rewarding (and slightly chaotic 😅) things we do on the farm 🥚💛

If you’re thinking about starting your own hatch—do it. Just be warned… chicken math is real 🫠🐓

🐰 BOY OR GIRL?! Let’s talk rabbit kits 👀

One of the most common questions we get is how to tell if a baby bunny is a buck or a doe and honestly, it can be confusing if you’ve never done it before!

At around 6 weeks old, it gets much easier 👇
✔️ Bucks (males) = round “O” shape that may pop out
✔️ Does (females) = slit “I” shape that stays flatter

We put together a simple visual guide to help you feel more confident checking your own kits 💛

✨ Pro tip: Compare multiple kits side-by-side—it clicks WAY faster that way!

If you’re ever unsure, don’t stress—double checking later is always a good idea 👍

Drop a 🐰 in the comments if you’ve ever struggled with this… we definitely did at first 😅

This is what all those 4am alarms, frozen stands, and slow sits actually look like.

Not glamorous.

Absolutely everything.
