Good morning everyone.

The news is not good. The sweet corn patch has been overrun with raccoons. They have gotten all of the first two plantings. The fence isn’t stopping them even though it’s as hot as I can make it.

I can no longer continue to fight a losing battle. There are simply too many animals to control. Some very large raccoons judging by the size of the footprints.

I’m very sorry to have to tell you all this. We had a great crop but couldn’t protect it and it’s done.

This is it for the Purple Barn. It’s impossible to protect the crops from all the animals that live along the river. The animal population is out of control and it’s just a losing battle.

Athena and I thank you all for your support, friendship, and kindness. We have gotten to know many of our customers and we can say you all are the best!

Update on the sweet corn. Good news is it is ripening and I’ve picked some. The bad news is the raccoons have destroyed most of the first planting. Thursday I picked some for a party. This morning it was torn to shreds. I left the field this morning and thought about going to get the tractor and disc and plowing it under.
I couldn’t believe they had found a way through my electric net. A closer look revealed that they had dug under the fence! I moved it and made the charge hotter but I think they have figured it out.
I’m so sorry for all of you who have been waiting so patiently. I’ll continue to try to get it under control but I can’t make any promises. That patch of sweet corn is the only corn field in the neighborhood and the smell of it pollinating has drawn the raccoons.
Hopefully our next message is good news.

Good evening all!
Overdue update on the sweet corn. The first planting has tasseled! Now to beat the raccoons and we will have sweet corn. Sorry it’s so late but I didn’t even get a chance to plant the first batch until June 2nd.
We are still a couple of weeks away but looks like a nice big crop. Tonight’s rain is timely.

Good evening! We hope you all are well and are enjoying our beautiful Ohio spring weather. It really makes you appreciate summer!
It’s been awhile since we’ve written anything so I decided to drop a line.
We are once again preparing for planting season. Actually all we need is for a few days of warm sunny weather and we are ready to get it done.
Last year wasn’t so good so we hope this year is better and we get to see everyone we missed!

Thanks to everyone for sticking with us!

Thankful Thursday!

We here at the Purple Barn have a lot to be thankful for! The season didn’t go as we had planned or hoped, but we still were able to provide some of our delicious homegrown produce and pumpkins and gourds to you our friends and neighbors!

With that being said, we’d like to invite you out to the barn one last time to get your pumpkins and gourds! We’ll be open tomorrow, Friday from 11-5 and Saturday 9-2. It’ll be the last days we’ll be open this season!
