After the days of cold rain, wind, sleet and hail, the girls were pretty excited for the sun yesterday to get some warmth and airtime. The bees are doing well and getting ready for spring to finally arrive and get started on this year’s honey!

The cold weather has been unbelievably oppressive, but the girls keep powering through. Friday it was -8°F when I took these pictures, after soaking overnight at -16°F. The bees generate heat by flexing wing muscles and keep the center of their cluster at about 90°F all Winter. The infra red picture shows the relative warmth vs the surroundings. A long way to go until Spring, but surviving through January and extreme cold is a good sign. 🐝🐝🐝🐝

The girls were out today enjoying the warm weather! It was really great to see them so strong as we head into Winter and with Mark's limited ability to manage them this Fall. We may not see them like this for a few months after this weekend... 🤨
We have more honey available - if you're interested send us a note. It's also available at Local. in Denver.

Another season has come to an end. Honestly, we thought it was going to be a disaster. How could it not be? Mark was sidelined for the season for the first time in 17 years. What made all the difference is that we are fortunate to have friends and family that reached out and brought their marvelous selves to the orchard to help us. They climbed ladders, hauled and handled hundreds of pounds of apples, and found joy in the company of new and old friends. Their kindness has been everything.
Our customers stayed with us, adjusting to new hours, discovering just the right apples and loads of honey to take home, and without fail, wishing Mark a successful recovery. We are grateful for their enduring support and friendly faces.
From the beginning to our last week of the season, many thanks to Alison, Bill, Brittany, Dave, Janna, Jeanna, Jim, Linda, Mark, Melanie, and Tom for all their work to make it happen. A very special shout out to Jeanna (aka Abby’s mom), who showed up every single morning with a contagious smile on her face and enough enthusiasm and energy to carry her (and sometimes her daughter) through the entire day, and then some. She is a force and truly amazing. And thankfully, Mark is on the mend. His broken arm will take many more months to fully recover, but the progress is encouraging.

On a fruiter note🍎, we do have a small quantity of apples remaining if you missed us on Saturday, including sauce and baking quality (thirds). We also have honey available. Please message us on FB or email us at [email protected] if you are interested in purchasing apples or honey for pick up this week.

Thanks to everyone that was a part of our season. We appreciate you🫶

Hope to see you on Saturday! We will be open 11am-4pm🍎

Fall has definitely taken hold and with that comes the end of our apple season! This week kicked off with a lovely yoga class by Wave of Life Studio on Monday, complete with refreshing autumn sprinkles. So happy to have them here! And yes, we were open on Tuesday! Thank you to those that braved the 45 mph wind gusts to visit us💨

Here is the scoop on the apples for this final week of our season. Our last two varieties are Chieftain and Blushing Gold. These are special apples and two of our favorites! Chieftain was developed at ISU in 1917. A cross of Jonathan and Delicious apples resulted in a wonderfully crisp, dense, and subtly sweet apple that keeps very well (thanks Spencer Beach!). Blushing Gold is a winter apple that we pick when it is not yet ripe. In storage, it becomes more golden and sweet over several weeks. Eaten or baked with now, it is tart (and great for pies). Both apples are for fresh or culinary use!

Hours for this week:

👉Open today, Wednesday 10/22, from 3-6pm with a limited supply of both of these apples, along with the last of our Empire and Mutsu.

👉Closed on Thursday 10/23 (and Friday 10/24) so we can prepare for our final day of the season.

📣LAST day of the season is Saturday 10/25! We will be open 11am-4pm!📣

This is the last pass through all our trees and will be a great time to stock up on fresh seasonal fruit for eating, sauce, cider, and baking! We will also have our delightful raw honey, which is wonderful for hot beverages, baking, and gifting!🐝

We look forward to seeing you today or Saturday and wishing you the happiest of fall days!🍎

Fun fact...we are open ☔️ or ☀️!
Despite the sprinkles, we had a fun day hosting a field trip for some wonderful 3rd graders before we opened yesterday and will be open again today and Thursday, 3-6pm as long as our apple supply holds out!
Apple varieties this week are the last of our Regent, Empire, and Jonagold. We may do some sampler bags if we find a little Grimes Golden, Mutsu, and Sayaka still on the trees. Grimes Golden and Sayaka are sweet-tart, leaning to the sweet side, and Mutsu is straight up tart! So great for crisps and pies if you love a honey or brown sugar balance situation.

As always, we have beautiful raw honey available this week.🐝

Enjoy your day!🍎

Here is the line up for this week! Jonagold, Regent & Empire (left to right) are all wonderful apples for eating out of hand. Each are sweet-tart in their own way, delicious, and juicy! Grab a napkin when you bite into these lovelies.😉 Jonagold is a premium dual tasker for excellent desserts. As always, we will have a mix of these varieties as sauce/baking quality apples available for those making sauces, apple butter, baked goods, or juicing.
We are open 3-6pm today and plan to be on Wednesday and Thursday this week as well if our apple supply holds out! Big thanks to Tom, Bill & Jeanna for their helping hands as we prepared for another week with Mark on the bench for the season🫶
See you soon!🍎
