🦥 SLOW SATURDAY

Here's your Saturday reminder that you don't have to cram 47 things into the weekend just because you finally have a minute! 😂

Pick ONE good thing and enjoy doing it today!

Put something on the stove that needs a few hours.. Piddle around in the garden.. Bake something just because.. Take the long way home.. Sit on the porch until you get hot.. Wander through the farmers market.. Read a few chapters of that book that's been sitting there.. Call somebody you haven't talked to in awhile.. Or take a nap right smack in the middle of the afternoon.. 💤

Fall is around the corner, and we're heading into that wonderful stretch of the year where everything starts slowing down a little more..

So maybe today doesn't need to be about getting ahead!

Maybe it's a good day to catch up with your own life!

💭 SITTIN' NEATH THE WILLOW, DREAMIN' OF BYGONE DAYS..

Here's a random one for today..

What's something you remember ALWAYS being at your grandma's house? 👵🏻🤎

Not necessarily anything important or valuable.. Just one of those little things that was so reliably THERE that, in your mind, it simply became part of Grandma's house!

Maybe it was a certain cookie she always kept in the cookie jar, a candy dish on the table, Avon bottles in the bathroom, an old clock ticking away in the living room, that old quilt made from Great-Grandma's dresses tucked perfectly on the spare bed, a jar of random buttons, a marble tower that kept you entertained for hours, her ugly curtains that somehow weren't ugly because they were just so "Grandma".. 😂

It's funny how the tiniest, most ordinary things stick with us..

And sometimes they stick SO well that years later, you catch yourself buying the same thing, making the same food, keeping something in the same place.. and suddenly realize:

Well goodness! I've become Grandma! 💁🏻‍♀️

I'm lucky enough to still have both of my grandmas!

When I was little, I remember one grandma ALWAYS having ice cream sandwiches stowed away in her chest freezer.. To this day, they're still a nostalgic treat for me!

And my other grandma? I'm going to have to say it's the cupboard overflowing with perfume bottles.. 🤭 That's just "Grandma"! and it makes me smile..

Now I'm curious about yours!

🫖 WHAT'S ON THE SHELVES

Today, let's poke around the herb shelves.. 🔎

This might be one of my favorite shelves because these jars aren't just pretty things sitting in a row!

They're useful, healing, and tasty!

You'll find individual herbs for building your own blends and tictures, loose-leaf teas already combined for that perfect cup of tea, and all sorts of leaves, flowers, roots and other curious little plant things waiting in jars! 🫙

One thing I especially love about loose herbs is that YOU get to decide what goes into your cup!

Want it stronger? Add more! Want to combine a few for a potent concoction? Do it.. Want enough to try a cup of brew without committing to a giant package? Just buy a little..

And there's something awfully satisfying about scooping herbs out of a jar instead of pulling a little paper packet from a cardboard box..🫠

🌾 BACK TO THE BASICS

It's September 1st!

The first of the "BER" months has officially arrived.. 🍂

Now, Louisiana may still be outside behaving VERY MUCH like July.. 😂 but there's something about turning that calendar page that feels like a little shift!

For generations, this time of year meant more than placing a spice scented candle in every room, gracing your front door with a leaf wreath, your steps with orange mums, and ordering pumpkin-flavored everything..

It was a season of PREPARING!

The remainder of the garden was picked..
Herbs were dried..
Food was canned, labeled and placed on the pantry shelf..
Wood was gathered and stacked..
Quilts and heavier blankets came back out..
Winter socks were mended..
Hay was put away in the barn..
Medicinal tinctures were made and tucked into a dark corner to infuse..
Summer's abundance was preserved for the leaner months ahead..
Homes were readied for shorter days and cooler weather..

There was a natural rhythm to it..

Spring was for planting! 🌱
Summer for tending! 💦
Autumn for gathering! 🍎
Winter for resting and enjoying the fruits of your labor! 🥧

We don't have to live exactly as our great-grandparents did to borrow a little wisdom from that rhythm..

Maybe the arrival of the "BER" months can still be our reminder to gather in a little closer, and start preparing..

Stock the pantry..
Preserve what's in season..
Finish up the garden..
Make the house cozy..
Cook more from scratch..
Prepare for the next season..

🦥 SLOW SATURDAY

Why do we hurry-scurry through everything we do? Maybe better isn't always about finding a faster way to do things! Sometimes the old, slower way was actually just alright..and maybe even good for the soul.. 😉
Grinding the grain instead of scooping flour that's been sitting in a bag for who-knows-how-long..
Growing the garden instead of rushing to Brookshire's every time you need a cucumber..
Making supper from scratch instead of putting a packaged meal in the microwave..
Mending the hole in the jeans instead of spending more money on a new pair..
Knowing the person who made what you're buying instead of buying another factory-made product from a big chain..
Using things until they're worn smooth from years of usefulness instead of tossing them in the trash at the first little scratch..
Letting the children play just a little longer instead of hurriedly swooping them out the door..
Sitting down long enough to finish a cup of coffee while it's still.....hot...........well, we're still working on that one! ☕😂
Little Willow was built around a love for those simpler, more intentional ways of living! Not because everything about the "good ol' days" was better, but because I think there are some very good things we've hurried right on past..
Good food.. Useful skills.. Quality things made to last.. Knowing our neighbors.. Working with our hands.. And learning to be a little less dependent on convenience!
Maybe we don't need to go backward.. Maybe we just need to reach back and pick up a few good things we left behind! 💁🏻‍♀️

Friday has arrived, and we're getting the mercantile ready for the weekend.. 🌿

The jars are being straightened, the shelves are being restocked, and there's plenty to wander through when you stop in at your favorite little store downtown..

Fresh-milled grains, wholesome pantry staples, herbs & teas, jar canned goods, kitchen treasures, immune boosting keep-ya-well's, natural body care, daily essentials, locally crafted handmade items, fabric by the yard, quality garden tools, gifts for all ages and all sorts of little mercantile finds!

You never quite know what you'll discover at Little Willow! 💁🏻‍♀️🧺

☕️ SLOW SATURDAY AT LITTLE WILLOW

There is something special about Saturday mornings in an old mercantile..

The door opens and the bell tinkles.
The old floors start creaking.
Customers begin wandering down the aisles with coffee in hand.
Puzzle pieces begin finding their places.
Shelves are being straightened.
Candy bags are being scooped full.
Grandpa settles himself into the old chair in the corner.
The littles excitedly run to the children's corner.
Fabric is being measured.
Honey jars are being filled.
A quarter goes into the gumball machine while a little boy claps with glee.
Old friends meet and the chatter begins.

And for a little while, everything feels a bit slower, and just about right.. 😌

That's what we hoped Little Willow Mercantile would become! Not simply a place to buy something, but a place to wander, visit, discover something useful, and remember that life doesn't always have to move so quickly..

Come spend a little Saturday with us! 🌿
