I saved this young whippersnapper for last….Jed was also with us from the beginning. He’s my manager, my right-hand man, my go-to for everything. I’m so glad he’s staying on with the new owners, as I’m confident he’ll do as great a job for them as he does for me. Whenever we would go on vacation, I never worried about things, as I knew he was taking care of things. I’ll miss working with this great guy!

I want give a shout-out to two people who have been with us from the very beginning. Gary Rutter, our Meat Manager, actually has been here since the Blizzard of ‘78, when Wally grabbed him off the street to help out, he’s never left. Gary has quite a following of loyal meat customers and has been a jack of all trades around here. Nancy Keeran, our Deli Manager, always has a smile on her face and never says a bad word about anybody! She also has a big following for her skills at making Deli Trays and all of the special orders that they get back there. I never have to worry about the meat department when they’re back there! Thanks Gary and Nancy!

I want to take a moment and pay tribute to someone very special to our family. 48 years ago Wally Amspoker came to me and asked if I wanted to learn how to manage the store and then later he would get another one and would run that for him, eventually purchasing it. One by one, Jill and I would travel to towns that were possibilities to move to, and one by one they all fell through……so it just worked out that it ended up being the original store here in Deshler! I’m glad that’s the way it worked out, since we were able to stay and raise our family here! I’m so grateful to Wally for everything he taught me and he was like a second father……live long and prosper Wally!

Some more memories…..in 1998, we competed in a contest among SuperValu’s in a three-state area. They were called “Spectaculars”. We went all-out for it! We had entertainment by PH Choir, games, raffles, and decorated up the place. We came in second place out of around 100 stores, and most of them were a lot bigger stores!

Some more memories…….every year we would have a Campbell’s Labels For Education contest and the winning classroom received a free lunch and ice cream party. We would keep track of the contest with a big poster and this particular year, it was Mrs Store’s class who won. They would walk from the Deshler building and this year Mr Tom Taylor came along to help supervise!
