As we turn the page on this chapter, we come together for one final day at Nathan’s Deli, a place that has been more than just a deli to us – it’s been a home filled with laughter, delicious bites, and the most incredible community one could ask for. 🥪💖
Today, we open our doors for the last time, not to say goodbye, but to celebrate the journey we’ve shared and the memories we’ve created together.
From our first sandwich to our last, every moment has been a treasure, made special for each and every one of you. As we look back, we’re filled with gratitude for the support, love, and friendship that you’ve shown us. It's been our honor to serve you, share stories over the counter, and be a part of this wonderful community.
Thank you for everything – here’s to new beginnings and carrying forward the spirit of Nathan’s Deli in our hearts. 💕🥂
Happy Easter & God Bless

Thank you so much Yolk & Toast Family Diner ❤️

Have your eyes ever met a sunrise on the Detroit river? When those sunbeams first hit, they scintillate and generously give a visceral warmth even in the dead of a cold, hard Michigan winter. Hope fills your soul as a new day begins… and that my friends is the view from Nathan’s deli at 581 E Jefferson as you gaze right through St. Antoine Street into the horizon.

27 years ago, Nathan’s deli opened its doors and quickly grew in popularity as one of Detroit most popular delicatessens. The Godfather which features in-house sliced roast beef with lettuce, tomato, provolone and mayo on a fresh hoagie is a landmark sandwich as unforgettable as the first time you heard Michael Corleone’s iconic words, “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.” Speaking of friends, if you are a U of D Mercy Alumni, it is highly likely that you have stumbled into this gem of a deli in the midsts of exhaustion and self-doubt only to meet Mary, owner and operator of Nathan’s. Mary served as a checkpoint to those weary students who needed to refuel both mentally and physically. A check point is described as a place along the route of a long distance race where the time for each competitor is recorded. But she was never comparing you to your cohorts, she was simply trying to connect
you back to reality through food and conversation and send you back on your way. Two skills second nature to Mary Martini. Mary opened the Deli when she was 30 years old along with her husband and 7 year old son. She has spent the last 27 years faithfully serving the ever-changing Detroit area rolling with the changes but keeping to her classic deli aesthetic and food quality. I came here often as a child when I slept over aunt Mary’s. I watched her tirelessly pursue her customers providing a connection that seems archaic compared to today’s standards but necessary for success. Mary taught me that service was 50% food and 50% interpersonal relationship and Man cannot survive on bread alone. A life lesson I continue to carry and pour into my own business.
We celebrated birthday party’s at Nathan’s after hours. It was a landmark not only to strangers but within our immigrant family- a source of pride. This Sunday, Nathan’s deli will close its doors after 27 awesome years. We salute our predecessor. The best is yet to come. Over and out.

Reminiscing over the 27 years here at the deli. This is our last week and we thought it would be a joy to share some fun facts about the deli.

1. Mare was only 30 years old when she opened the deli in 1997
2. Mares son Illir was only seven years old when she opened the deli
3. Martin, Mare’s husband, with his culinary skills contributed to creating the menu and a lot of Nathan’s Deli favorites that we all love.

With a mixture of emotions, I am writing to share the news of the closure of Nathan's Deli after 27 remarkable years in the heart of Downtown Detroit. As we bid farewell to this cherished establishment, I am filled with profound gratitude for the journey we have shared and the countless memories we have created together.

First, I want to express my deepest thanks to God for the blessings, opportunities, protection, and cherished moments that Nathan's Deli has provided me and my family. It has been an incredible privilege to serve this community, and I am forever grateful for the time spent here.

I would also like to take a moment to honor the memory of our late landlord, who passed away in 2021. His support and guidance were instrumental in shaping the identity and legacy of Nathan's Deli, and we are forever grateful for him.

Nathan's Deli has been more than just a business to me; it has been my second home. The relationships forged with each and every one of you, our loyal customers, have been the highlight of my time here. Your unwavering support, kind words, and smiles have brought joy and fulfillment to my life, and I am deeply grateful for the bonds we have formed.

I also want to express my gratitude to our local businesses who entrusted us with their catering needs. Your patronage and loyalty have sustained us throughout the years, and I am truly grateful for your support.

To all those who have contributed to the success of Nathan's Deli – To the awesome staff, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Your dedication and hard work have been the backbone of this deli, and I am immensely grateful and proud of you all. To the city of Detroit employees who have supported us, especially during the challenges of the pandemic, and to the news media for their positive coverage thorough out the years, I extend my heartfelt thanks.

Last but certainly not least, I want to thank my family for their unwavering support and hard work. Your love, encouragement, and sacrifices have been the driving force behind Nathan's Deli, and I am eternally grateful for everything you have done. Each and everyone of you have been an integral pillar to the deli.

While it is difficult to say goodbye, the decision to close Nathan's Deli was not made lightly, despite my hopes to continue Nathans Deli in its current location. If you have any questions or would like to reach out, please feel free to call or email me: (313) 962-3354, [email protected].
