The story of Prince Valley Market began in 1967 when founder, Hani Gappy, arrived in Detroit from Baghdad, Iraq, leaving his entire family of nine brothers and sisters behind. His goal was to become a successful business owner.

In 1972, he opened his first Prince Valley store on Cass Ave. Then, in 1975, he purchased an opened his first Supermarket on Michigan and Livernois, where they currently still operate.

Despite setbacks, including a fire in 1999, Hani and his son, Joe, who is the current owner, managed to grow a successful customer-centric business. Prince Valley now boasts a tortilla factory, Hispanic bakery and pastry department, a full-service meat counter, and other services such as a financial center, MetroPCS, and serves as a USPS location.

This year, Prince Valley Market celebrates 50-years of being a pillar in our community. It was my honor to present them with a Spirit of Detroit award today in commemoration and gratitude for their service. 🙏

P.S. For those of you wondering, yes, due to Hani's success, he was able to fulfill his promise of bringing his family to Detroit. 💜

Prince Valley (Detroit, MI)

Beef Birria:
2 to 3 pounds of chuck roast
Queso chihuahua
3 Guajillo chiles
2.25 cups of water
0.5 Tbsp Mexican oregano
2 bay leaves
0.5 white onion
2 to 3 carrots
2 large garlic cloves
1.5 Tbsp chicken bouillon
2 cloves
0.25 Tbsp black pepper

Cook on low for 8-9 hours or on high for 4-5 hours

Quesabirria Tacos:
Chihuahua cheese
Lime
White Onion
Cilantro
Corn tortillas

May is National Salsa Month 🌶️

Did you know salsa dates back hundreds of years? The Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas combined tomatoes, chili peppers, and herbs to create early versions of the salsa we know today. The word salsa itself means “sauce” in Spanish, and it has grown into one of America's favorite condiments.
