Long time no see! I didn’t take a video however since we are in a dearth (not much blooming), I put the top hive feeder back on. I mixed up some 1:1 sugar syrup to get them through! Everyone seemed to be doing good, a lot of flying and buzzing around!

Happy Sunday y’all! I just wanted to give you all a little update: I ordered a nucleus of bees in January and they are supposed to arrive in early April! I think that my down fall last year was the bees didn’t get established good enough to fair the winter. A nucleus is like a mini bee hive that has 3/4 frames that the queen is already laying eggs in and the workers are already storing honey. Thank you all for the continued support of this hobby of mine and I can’t wait to get this new colony started!

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the loss of our hive here at Dunn’s Honey Haven. I had prepared the bees the best way I could for the winter. I fed sugar water until the temperatures got to freezing, then I fed a soft candy mixture, since sugar water will freeze. I also reduced the entrance to keep cold air from getting in. However the low temperatures this week and last froze them. We are in the process of ordering some more bees to try this again in the spring. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we start all over.

It’s been a rough/dry summer for beekeeping, with winter quickly approaching we need to boost the stores within this hive to ensure they survive the cold weather. Follow along as I install a feeder and do a quick check up!
