A LETTER TO OUR CUSTOMERS
The rumors are true. We sold the deli ! When we renovated in 2011 , we never imagined we d be here another decade ! We knew mom couldn’t do this forever and my sisters and I have lives and obligations that make a daily commute to east Hanover impossible to sustain .
The decision however was not an easy one to make . Sue & Angelo raised my sisters and I in East Hanover & We have been a part of this community since 1978 - to say that our customers are family is an understatement. Some of you remember the old building , way back to the “Eugene “ years. Some of you remember my dad & tell hilarious stories about your encounters with him . (If you’re female- he undoubtedly called you “margarite ”.)Some of you come up from west orange where our original store & butcher shop was since just a few years ago -when we consolidated the 2 businesses into one . (Thank you for making the trip “up the hill”to say hi to Angela and Chili “the butcher”. )Some work in East Hanover but live else where . You stop by for lunch &
take-home dinners and say “man I wish we had a place like yours in my town”. You are old classmates & teachers . You are our hair stylist and our dogs vet . You’re our doctor , lawyer , plumber, electrician and landscaper.
You are neighbors . You are friends. You have seen us at our worst ;arguing and stressed —and you can sympathize because you know what it’s like to work with family . You held us up when our dad died . We cried with you when you lost yours. If that’s not family then what is?
When the pandemic hit last year , we had to think fast . For a moment , people had no idea what was happening . Afraid to go anywhere , unable to get certain foods , insta cart deliveries backed up forweeks , other businesses locking their doors . I will never forget the conversation . “What should we do ? Do we close ? What about all the seniors in the town calling because they can’t get food ? Are we risking our lives ?! “ To which Angela (“mommy”) replied in her finest Italian accent . “If you die , I die . Letsa go “ .
So we shut down our menus and
Became strictly a grocery store. And We are so so fortunate to have been one of the few businesses to have not only survived but thrived during a time when so many weren’t as fortunate .
So what’s next for angelos deli ?
We are super lucky to have found a wonderful family from Brooklyn to pass the torch to . They were born into this business .They’re young & energetic & have plans to take angelos to the next level .
They will make changes where needed & keep all the great stuff that works . They will have the help of our staff who is staying on board & they welcome YOUR help too ! Tell them what you need and what you’d like to see more of ! Sal and his wife Cristina are eager to make you guys a part of their family as you have been ours .
On behalf of my mom Sue , my sisters Gina and Sandy , and my Dad Angelo , who would have been so so proud of his wife and girls , we love you !
and we thank you for an incredible 43 years !
-Angela
