It’s our 3 year anniversary and it’s taken me 3 years to find the words to share the story of what inspired May’s Gluten Free Market.
A lot of times it is hard to find the motivation to keep going—owning a small business can be soul crushing. There is so much you don’t know until you’re IN it. The unpredictability and trying to balance everything weighs heavy.
Every year I think how nice it would be to celebrate our “Birthday” with a party and giveaways and all the things to let ALL OF YOU know how much we appreciate you, but the truth is we are still in the early growth phase of our business and margins are not only tight, but expenses are increasing and sometimes it just feels like everyone is out to get you—the state, the city, the suppliers, the bank. Little mistakes have big consequences when there is so little margin for error and we are constantly learning from our mistakes and it’s exhausting. Burn out, crashing out, whatever you want to call it, it’s real.
I say all of this because when it came to sharing what inspired the idea for the shop from the beginning, it brought up all the “why’s” and the biggest one is the child I built this for. When I feel like giving up, I think about all the things we carry in the shop that she loves and won’t be able to find anymore, anywhere. I think about all the customers who have cried when they walk through our doors. I think about all the kids who don’t have access to safe foods at school. I also think of all the small and emerging brands that we support and want to see succeed.
So on the anniversary 3 years in business, I share our story from diagnosis to the present. It was hard to know how much to share but I think so many of you can relate! THANK YOU ALL for 3 great years and we hope to serve you for many, many more! 💕
