It's planting time in the herb gardens. I love this time of year because it's symbolic of belief in the future and it reconnects me with earth. Planting, growing, harvesting, then the earth sleeps waiting for the warmth to return and to start the cycle all over again. I am planting as I w**d out tons of w**ds that head to the large composting area to break down then to be returned to garden to fill new beds and to add nutrients to existing ones. ~ Karen

Memorial Day weekend is here, and at the farm, we believe the best holiday meals start with a foundation of high-quality, local ingredients. If you’re firing up the grill this weekend, elevate your burger game with a blend that is as nutrient-dense as it is delicious.

🍔 The Ultimate Local "Memorial Day" Blend

This is my go-to recipe for a burger that stands out from the rest. By blending Kelsey Lake Market ground beef with Bennett Farms ground pork, you get a perfect ratio of lean protein and healthy, pasture-raised fats.

The "Farm-to-Grill" Seasoning:

Quality meat deserves quality seasoning. To bring out the best in these local proteins, I reach for these pantry essentials:

Worcestershire Sauce: Adds a deep, savory umami base.

Frontier Co-op Garlic Granulars: For that sharp, aromatic punch that only high-quality garlic provides.

Frontier Applewood Smoked Salt: This is the secret weapon! It provides that authentic "slow-smoked" flavor without needing a smoker, making it perfect for quick grilling.

Why this matters for your body:

When you use pasture-raised ground beef and pork, you aren't just eating for flavor—you’re eating for bioavailability. Pasture-raised fats contain a superior profile of Omega-3 fatty acids compared to industrial options, providing you with clean, sustained energy for all your holiday weekend activities.

We are fully stocked with Kelsey Lake Ground Beef and Bennett Farm Ground Pork in the freezers. Swing by the farm shop to grab yours!

Get ready for your Memorial Day weekend grilling and hosting! We’ve been busy in the field, and the latest harvest of our signature Lettuce Mix is officially restocked in the silver refrigerator at the farm shop.

🥗 Peak-Freshness for the Holiday Weekend

We’ve put in the work to ensure you have the freshest, most vibrant greens for your holiday table. Because these were harvested on Monday they retain the crispness and high enzyme content that grocery store greens lose after sitting in transit for days.

We're getting ready to harvest more lettuce for the weekend at Goshen Farmers Market and to restock the refrigerator once all of this disappear!

New Sizes for Your Summer Salads!

Whether you’re feeding a crowd at your Memorial Day cookout or stocking up for the week ahead, we’ve got you covered:

5-oz. Bags: The perfect size for daily fresh salads.

NEW 10-oz. Family-Size Bags: By popular demand, we’ve added a larger bag option so you can keep your fridge stocked with nutrient-dense fuel without running out mid-weekend.

Why "Fresh-Cut" Matters

When you source your greens from our field plots, you’re getting plants that have developed their flavor and nutrient density in our local soil. These aren't just "salad leaves"—they are living, nutrient-packed fuel designed to elevate everything from your burger toppings to your side salads.

Bring a piece of the original Michigan and Indiana prairie to your backyard! If you are looking to build a garden that is as resilient as it is beautiful, our greenhouse is currently stocked with a curated selection of local native perennials.

Native plants are the backbone of a healthy home ecosystem. They have deep root systems that thrive in our local soil, require less water once established, and provide the specific food and habitat our local pollinators—like monarch butterflies and honeybees—desperately need.

🌱 Featured Native Powerhouses

Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum): A true giant of the prairie. Its deeply lobed leaves traditionally point North and South to manage the summer sun. It’s a stunning architectural piece for any garden and a favorite for goldfinches.

Wild Quinine (Parthenium integrifolium): Known for its unique, cauliflower-like white flower clusters that bloom for a remarkably long time. It adds a sophisticated texture to any native bed and is a magnet for beneficial insects.

Burning Heart Sunflower (Heliopsis): For those who love drama! This variety features dark, moody foliage and vibrant "burning" orange-to-yellow centers. It’s a native powerhouse that brings pollinators in droves from mid-summer through fall.

Elderberry Bushes (Sambucus canadensis): The ultimate "edible landscape" plant. Elderberries offer beautiful white flower umbels in the spring and nutrient-dense dark berries in the fall. Great for wildlife, and even better for homemade syrups!

Why Choose Natives?

By planting native, you aren't just gardening; you’re participating in restorative landscaping. These plants are adapted to our specific climate, meaning they are lower maintenance for you and higher value for the environment.

Stop by this weekend to browse our full selection and find the right native "anchors" for your home garden.

Your guide to the local summer harvest has officially arrived! We are thrilled to announce that the Early Summer issue of Edible Michiana is now available at Nelson's Herbs and Farm Market.

As your local source for food culture, we believe that knowing where your food comes from is just the beginning—knowing what to do with it is where the magic happens.

📖 Explore the Local Food Scene: Edible Michiana is Here! 🍴

This issue is packed with inspiration for anyone who lives for the Michiana food community. Whether you’re a home cook or a local dining enthusiast, this is your definitive seasonal handbook.

✨ Why we love this issue:

Seasonal Recipes: It’s full of incredible, nutrient-dense recipes that highlight exactly what is coming off the farm benches right now. From fresh asparagus dishes to creative ways to use your spring greens, it’s a masterclass in seasonal eating.

The "Hidden Gem" Guide: One of my favorite ways to use the magazine is to browse the restaurant features and advertisements. It is the best way to discover new local eateries and farm-to-table spots that are truly committed to high-quality ingredients.

Community Stories: Dive deep into the food culture of our region and meet the producers and chefs who make Michiana a premier destination for food lovers.

The summer garden "powerhouses" are moving to the front row! This Friday, we are rearranging our seedling benches and moving our Tomato, Pepper, and Eggplant starts outdoors.

Not only does this make it easier for you to browse our massive selection of varieties, but it also helps these sun-loving plants continue their "hardening off" process, ensuring they are tough, resilient, and ready for your garden soil.

🍅 Variety Spotlight: The Cherokee Purple Heirloom

If you only plant one heirloom tomato this year, let it be the Cherokee Purple. There is a reason this variety is a legendary favorite among garden enthusiasts and chefs alike.

Why it’s a Nutrient-Dense Superstar:

Antioxidant Powerhouse: That signature "dusty purple" and deep mahogany hue is a sign of high levels of Anthocyanins—the same powerful antioxidants found in blueberries.

Complex Nutrition: Beyond its high Vitamin C and Lycopene content, its rich, savory flavor comes from a complex profile of minerals and organic acids developed in healthy, living soil.

Heirloom Integrity: Legend has it this variety was shared by the Cherokee people in the late 1800s. By planting it, you’re preserving a piece of agricultural history while growing a fruit that far surpasses grocery store tomatoes in both flavor and vitality.

The Flavor Profile:

Often described as "the ultimate tomato flavor," the Cherokee Purple is famous for its perfect balance of sweetness and a deep, smoky, almost salty richness. It’s the king of the summer sandwich and the star of any caprese salad.

🚜 Plan Your Friday Visit:

We’ve made finding your favorites easier than ever! Stop by this weekend to walk the rows and pick out the strongest starts for your most productive harvest yet.

The spring harvest is in full swing this morning! At Nelson's Herbs and Farm Market, we prioritize the "soil-to-table" speed because that is what preserves the vital enzymes and antioxidants that your body needs.

When you buy produce harvested just hours ago, you aren't just getting flavor—you’re getting peak bioavailability.

🟢 Fresh From the Field: Morning-Harvested Asparagus

We just finished our morning harvest, and these vibrant green spears are waiting for you on the produce bench!

The Nutrient Edge: Asparagus is one of the best sources of prebiotic fiber and Glutathione (a powerful antioxidant). Because these were cut this morning, they retain their natural sugars and crisp texture, making them a delicious way to support gut health.

🥧 Tart & Vibrant: Rhubarb

We have 4 fresh bunches of rhubarb ready for your weekend baking or roasting.

Bone Health Hero: Rhubarb is a surprising source of Vitamin K1 and Calcium. Pair it with some local honey for a nutrient-dense dessert that packs a punch.

❄️ The Silver Refrigerator: Protein & Greens

Our cooling station is stocked with high-vitality staples:

Pasture-Raised Eggs: Choose between our rich Jody's Happy Hens (Chicken) or the supercharged, vitamin-heavy Hansing's Happy Hens (Duck).

Living Greens: We have fresh Lettuce Mixes and Mild Greens Mixes. These are the perfect foundation for a nutrient-dense meal—grown in our healthy soil and handled with care to keep the vitamins intact.
