That smell before a storm even has a name. Scientists call the earthy part petrichor, from the Greek for stone. Your grandmother just called it rain coming, and she was right either way. Most folks can catch it before the first drop ever lands.

In 1934 a chemist named Richard Gane proved that ripening fruit gives off a gas, and that the gas is what ripens fruit. Ethylene. Your tomatoes are making it right now, and the cold nights are about to switch the whole factory off.

The red in a tomato is a pigment called lycopene, and the plant only builds it inside a narrow band of warmth, roughly fifty to eighty five degrees. A hot July stalls it, which is why August fruit sometimes hangs orange for a week. A cold September night stalls it the other way. Below fifty the fruit stops turning, and if it sits there long enough it goes mealy or splits in the next rain.

So the vine is no longer the best place for it. Any tomato with the first blush of color at the bottom has already sealed itself off from the plant. It will finish on the kitchen counter, by itself, from its own ethylene. A paper bag with a banana speeds it up. The refrigerator is the one place it must never go, because cold kills the flavor for the same reason it kills the color.

Watch the forecast for the first night in the forties. That evening, pick everything with a blush. 🍅

☀️🔥 IMPORTANT MARKET UPDATE FOR THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH! 🔥☀️
With the heat in the forecast, we’re making a small change to help protect our vendors, shoppers, and products while still giving everyone a chance to enjoy the market!
⏰ SALES WILL BEGIN EARLY AT 7:00 AM THIS SATURDAY!
We encourage everyone to COME EARLY, shop early and beat the heat! As temperatures rise throughout the morning, the market may end earlier than our normal noon closing time if conditions become too hot.
Our normal market hours remain 8 AM–12 PM, but for Saturday, September 5th, you can begin shopping at 7 AM. 🌽🍎🥕🌻
🐾 And please remember our four-legged friends! Hot pavement and sidewalks can become dangerously hot for your pup’s paws. Before bringing your dog, check the pavement with the back of your hand and consider whether they may be safer staying home in the air conditioning. ❤️🐶
