Today, we honor and celebrate both our beloved planet AND the farmers and gardeners who take care of it! Every day is Earth Day for our local producers, as they tend to the soil and care for the land to provide nourishment for our community all year round. We are endlessly grateful for each and every one of you who have spent the looong winter planning, watching the weather evolve between seasons (and continuously pivoting around it's unpredictability!), and are gearing up for another incredible market season ahead. Thank you for ALL you do, for your community and the Earth!

Thank you Suz McLaughlin and Aubrey Ann Parker for all that you do! 😊

Some of you may not know that, in addition to my work as a photographer for high school seniors and families, I am the co-owner and editor for The Betsie Current, a free local community newspaper in Benzie County.

I have lots of roles to play at the paper: delivery girl, ad seller, and, of course, photographer.

Back in June 2015, I snapped this pic of Suz McLaughlin while she was rounding up goodies at the Elberta Community Farmers Market.

Suz is owner of Still Grinning Kitchen, a catering company based out of her home in Frankfort. Her business is probably best known for her appetizer platters of fresh, local (when possible) veggies and cheese spreads that typically are piled high with asparagus, green beans, pickled beets, carrots, and cherry tomatoes, as well as homemade pita chips. The cheese spread, on its own platter, is as big as a birthday cake and just as pretty, topped with olives, red onion rounds, lemon zest, artichokes, and loads of parsley.

Suz herself, however, is probably best known for her activism on local issues ranging from supporting local foods to fundraising for local scholarships, from advocating for fresh water to participating in the crafting of zoning ordinances.

We picked Suz's brain more than a decade ago, but much of her wisdom still rings true.

I just wanted to say it has been an honor to be the Market Manager for the Elberta Community Farmers Market these past two seasons. This Market has always been one of my happy places. 😊 It is a village within a village that builds itself every week in a community of heart. That being said, I would like to thank all of our customers and vendors! Without you there would be no community. We hope to see you tomorrow morning!
