Our final featured local leading lady for the 2021 Women’s History Series is a 1966 graduate of the former Ellerbe High School. Although Cora “Sue” Agee Jarvis does not currently reside in Richmond County, she credits her accomplishments to her humble beginnings in Ellerbe.
The middle child of Otis “Bill” Agee and Minnie McDonald Agee’s three children, Sue acquired strong leadership skills at an early age when her father passed and she took on responsibilities at home to help her widowed mother.
Sue has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Economics from Appalachian State University and a Master of Science Degree in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She spent 37 years in the public education system in North Carolina, with many years in both secondary and post-secondary schools as a counselor and instructor. Her career began in Montgomery County with the public school system and culminated at Surry Community College. She also worked at Richmond Community College, Montgomery Community College, Surry Community College, and Stokes County Schools.
She is a member of the King Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of King, Pfafftown Baptist Church, Stokes County Cooperative Extension Service Advisory Leadership Council, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Bethania Moravian Quilters, and City with Dwellings Overflow Shelters Volunteers.
Since her retirement Sue has been very active in her community and is involved in multiple community organizations and projects. Additionally, she found creative ways to share her passion in American Literature, dramatic arts, folklore, and oral history with multiple audiences. Since 2009, she has performed Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” at Triple L Farms’ “Derby Store”. She has also performed her one-woman presentation of the popular story for many others in locations around the state, including the Montgomery Senior Center in Troy and the Hamlet Depot.
She has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her career. Most recently, in 2016, she was named “Retired Community Leader of the Year” by the King Chamber of Commerce.
Sue currently resides in Tobaccoville in Stokes County with her husband, Ken, and they have one daughter, Ann-Marie.
Join us today, on Sue’s birthday, in celebrating this Ellerbe native for her dedication to the public education system in our state, returning annually to share her passion of literature and creative expression in our community, and representing one of the many strong women born and bred in Richmond County!
