September is Oregon Cheese Month! Oregon has a rich dairy industry, with some of the county’s largest dairy farms. Did you know we have our very own local dairy star vending at the Lane County Farmers Market?

Mariano Battro started La Mariposa in 1996 in Argentina, using tricks taught to him by his cheesemaker dad. After moving to Oregon and working for a few local cheese companies and dairy farms, Mariano started La Mariposa back up again in 2009. He continues to operate in Salem.

Using local Tillamook milk to craft Argentina-style cheeses (some of which are Mariano’s family recipes), La Mariposa makes both hard and soft spreadable cheeses in small batches. Their selection at the market includes chili-herb and garlic-chive spreadable pettit suisse, and some aged block cheeses like a hard mild cheddar and two varieties of semi-hard Argentinian Chubut: one with parsley, garlic and onion, and one with black pepper.

Lane County Farmers Market is having a strong year, and now it’s time for the community to show its support.

The market was named No. 1 in Oregon last year in the America’s Farmers Market Celebration, and voting is now open to help it compete among the best farmers markets in the country.
