It's morel mushroom season – if you know, you know. ...But what if you don't know?!

Buckle up for mushroom Monday to learn about this tasty, seasonal treat!

• Morels are saprophytic fungi, meaning they feed on dead organic matter, i.e., trees. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the larger fungi organism - think of a mushroom as an apple and the fungus as the tree.

• Morels are a tasty treat and add a unique, earthy taste of nature as an appetizer, side, or in a dish. But these native mushrooms are hard to farm, so they have to be foraged in the wild. Always properly identify any fungi before consumption.

• Illinois is home to at least three species: Yellow morel (M. esculenta), black morel (M. elata), and the half-free morel (M. semilibera). They start to pop up as early as March in southern Illinois.
