Today I had a question about the value of a new organic potassium chloride product and if we should promote it to our customers. Here is my response: No we do not want to promote this. Organic or not it is detrimental to soil biology and has very poor uptake into plants due to the chlorides hindering the bonding of potassium with phosphate. In other words phosphate carries nutrients into the plant in the form of phosphate of iron, phosphate of potassium etc. But the chlorides hinder this and so potassium chloride is a low efficiency fertilizer. When this is combined with a detriment to biology we end up with something that is a very poor choice for farmers even at its lower price. Potassium sulfate is the better choice. ~Jon Frank
