Katydid Ranch is a 40 acre farm that follows organic production practices and permaculture design (link) principles in growing vegetables and raising pastured poultry. We market our vegetables and eggs through a 40 member CSA program. The poultry are sold from the farm, direct to individuals. My name is Whitney Coleman and I purchased Katydid Ranch in 2005 with the dream of farming it and keeping
my horses at home. This was not a shock to friends and family as my whole life has been a series of experiences developing the passion, knowledge and skills to run a farm. I grew up on a conventional farm in Pawnee, Illinois where we raised corn, beans, hay and cattle….and cats and dogs and a few hogs. I spent summers doing what farm kids do - getting into mischief and helping out on the farm where needed. When it came time to move on to college, I attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (link farms) and studied Animal Science. While other kids picked up jobs on “the strip” waitressing, cooking and bartending, I chose to work at the University Research Farms collecting soybean research data, hand-breeding popcorn, milking cows, and feeding the calves. I loved my jobs! After graduation I joined the US Peace Corps and taught Agriculture to students in Kasane, Botswana (link). It was there that I first learned about “organic” production practices for vegetables, fruit trees, field crops and poultry. Organic farming was not by choice for the Batswana people, but due to a lack of means for purchasing chemicals. I was learning as much as I was teaching…it was a beautiful thing! When I returned to the U.S., I received a Graduate School assistantship to study Animal Nutrition, conduct primary research and teach undergraduate classes. This opened the door to 5 years of animal feed sales in Wisconsin followed by 5 years of pharmaceutical sales….moving further and further from my passion in life. And so it was, that in 2005, I finally put money and roots down in Fall Creek, Wisconsin and bought the farm!
