This week’s melon of the week has a hint of citrus and an almost honeydew-like flavor. It’s the Lemon Drop Melon, created in Arizona by Matori Farms and released to the public in 2013. This melon thrives in the hot climate of its origins. It has a long harvest cycle of 80 to 90 days, requires plenty of sun and well-drained soil, and needs ample water.

This melon has a yellowish rind and whitish yellow flesh inside. Ripe melons will have a melony smell and a creamy yellow rind. The melon itself is a great source of fiber, vitamins B6 and C, and potassium. It’s eaten like a cantaloupe or the aforementioned honeydew. Cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, and cut into wedges. The juice from the melon has a citrusy flavor, and the rinds can be eaten as well or used in smoothies. Come in and enjoy the Lemon Drop Melon!

This week’s melon of the week is the Emerald Crisp melon! It also goes by store-specific names, but it is a lesser-known Hami-type melon from the Mediterranean. This melon tends to be smaller than the ever-popular cantaloupe or honeydew. It develops a dark green rind when ripe, often with heavy netting. The flesh is pale orange or yellow and is sweet, crisp, and juicy, with a texture and a hint of flavor reminiscent of a Honeycrisp apple or a pear. It’s best served chilled and can be paired with cheese and prosciutto or blended into a smoothie or cocktail. Come try the Emerald Crisp today!
