Dear friends and family,
Meet Landis Coulter Moore - born April 8th at 4ish in the morning and he has been snuggled up with LeAnn ever since.
Landis was LeAnn’s great grandfathers name. He was a farmer that worked in the loamy fields of Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Landis means “son of the land” in German and seemed like the perfect fit for our little guy who will grow up living around this land that we love so dearly - our hope is that he will grow to know a deep kinship with the soil, trees, fauna and waters of our amazing Shenandoah valley.
Coulter, is the English occupational name for a plow-maker. It is our hope that he will become a “cultivator of life” - one who will dig deep into the metaphorical “loam” of our community and foster the seeds of joy and abundance that persistently yearns to be brought to life and reality.
For those who have had the misfortune of hearing me wax philosophically about farming and community, you might also recognize the Coulter name from the family of characters who dwell in the fictional town of Port William from my favorite collection of writings by Wendell Berry. So, for me, it’s also a special nod to the very writings that inspired me to return to my dear hometown and the piece of dirt where I am daily learning to live “the life of a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children; who has undertaken to cherish it and do it no damage, not because he is duty-bound, but because he loves the world and loves his children” (“The unforeseen wilderness” - Wendell Berry 1971).
We are so excited to see this little guy grow up in the loving arms of our beloved community (or “membership” as Wendell would put it) and are incredibly thankful for all the well-wishes, meals, love, and support we’ve received. It wouldn’t be as amazing a time without you guys!
