A quiet winter moment at the hive.
On cold days, you may find a single bee outside the hive. This isn’t a sign of trouble.
In winter, bees cluster tightly to conserve warmth and energy. When a worker senses she can no longer contribute due to age or depleted reserves, she may leave the hive on her own. By doing so, she helps protect the colony from moisture, disease, and heat loss.
Once outside the cluster, cold temperatures quickly still the body.
It’s instinctive.
It’s purposeful.
And it’s one of the ways a healthy hive survives winter.
Nature doesn’t waste. Even in the coldest months, the hive is working exactly as intended.
