The scene on Saturday, the first day of the store's going-out-of-business half-off sale, was "bittersweet:" a team of family members was busy behind the counter as shoppers came in at the 9 a.m. opening for deals, bumping into each other and laughing while trying to hold back tears.

A going out of business sale is set to take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 1-3 at the store, 5104 Industrial Avenue, after it closed in March, just prior to the death of 84-year-old owner Henry Harden on April 10.

The Hardens would also show their appreciation to the community by holding an annual picnic to thanks customers, donate clothes and became involved in area sports teams as Henry was an avid sports fan, sharing a particular fondness of late for the Los Angeles Lakers.
