NSA General Assembly Meeting – April 30, 2026

Today, the National Supermarket Association held its monthly General Assembly Meeting, bringing together members and key partners for an afternoon of valuable updates, collaboration, and important discussions impacting our industry.

The meeting began with an opening prayer and introductions, setting the tone for a productive session.

We were pleased to welcome Mercado Bread Company, where Manny introduced their new line of Portuguese bread products, expected to be available in mid-May and distributed through major retailers.

Our members also learned about an exciting opportunity from Super Cakes, a bakery offering an innovative in-store program featuring specialty baked goods, with the first order provided at no cost to participating stores.

A key highlight of the meeting was our discussion with the New York City Police Department. Representatives addressed critical concerns regarding shoplifting and public safety, and introduced a new pilot program placing officers in high-incident areas near supermarkets to strengthen relationships with store owners and improve response times.

We also thank the New York State Department of Labor for their comprehensive and informative presentation covering: • Minimum wage requirements

• Overtime regulations
• Paid sick leave policies
• Employment laws for minors

This session provided essential guidance to help our members remain compliant and informed.

At NSA, we remain committed to supporting our members through education, advocacy, and strong partnerships that help drive our industry forward.

The National Supermarket Association recognizes the leadership of Senator Chris Murphy following the introduction of the Fair Prices for Local Businesses Act, and his visit to Hartford alongside Anthony Peña, President of the National Supermarket Association.

This initiative brings national attention to a long-standing issue impacting independent supermarkets across the country.

Independent businesses are paying more for the same products.
Large corporations are using their power to secure better pricing.
This system is forcing small businesses to compete at a disadvantage.

For years, these unfair practices have placed increasing pressure on independent supermarkets and the communities they serve.

As stated by NSA President Anthony Peña:
“Independent supermarkets are not asking for special treatment, we are demanding fair treatment.”
Independent supermarkets are essential to the fabric of our neighborhoods, providing access to fresh food, creating jobs, and supporting working families.

When independent supermarkets are pushed out, communities lose access, jobs, and stability.
The National Supermarket Association remains committed to advocating for policies that restore fairness, strengthen competition, and ensure that independent businesses can compete on a level playing field.

NSA Addresses Industry Challenges at March 26 General Assembly Meeting

The National Supermarket Association hosted its latest General Assembly Meeting on Thursday, March 26, 2026, bringing together members, industry leaders, and strategic partners for a dynamic and purposeful session.

This month’s meeting featured presentations from United Food Brands, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, Grace Kennedy/La Fe, and Ozone Refrigeration, who introduced their latest products, services, and innovations to our members.

A key highlight of the meeting was a critical discussion on the proposed $30 minimum wage and its potential impact on independent supermarkets. Members expressed serious concerns regarding the sustainability of small businesses, the rising cost of operations, and the potential effects on jobs, pricing, and the communities we proudly serve.

The National Supermarket Association remains committed to advocating for its members and ensuring that their voices are heard as policies that directly affect our industry continue to be considered.

Together, we will continue to stand, inform, and advocate for the future of independent supermarkets.
