Grant's Pumpkin Sales

Grant's Pumpkin Sales I'm a 10 year old boy who grows pumpkins and sells them so I have spending money for the year. GRANT'S PUMPKIN SALES. (G.P.S.) My name is Grant.

The best location to buy your pumpkins! I am going into 5th grade. This is my 5th year running my pumpkin sales business!

INSPIRATION FOR MY PUMPKIN BUSINESS:
I was 6 years old when I got the idea for my business. My dad was telling me that he grew up on a hobby farm. His family grew several acres of vegetables and berries and sold them at a large stand in front

of their house and at a farmer's market. The money earned paid for their family to go on a big two week summer vacation. As kids, my dad and his siblings also grew and sold flowers at the stand, and they got to keep what they earned from the flower sales as spending money for themselves. I really liked the idea of having something to sell to earn spending money. It was then that I decided I wanted to sell pumpkins! My parents gave me seed money to start my business, both literally and figuratively. My first year in 2019 was both a lot of hard work and a lot of fun. I made enough money that I decided to do it again the following year. Now this is my 5th year running my little business. Each year as I get older, I have new skills which adds to my responsibilities as a pumpkin farmer. One year, my math skills were good enough that I could start adding up the prices on the pumpkins to give my customers a total and make change, most often on my own without needing help from my parents. Another year, I was old enough to drive our lawn tractor and haul pumpkins in from the pumpkin patch.

Happy first day of FALL!

Unfortunately, this growing season wasn't good for my pumpkin patch. Sadly, I don't have a harvest to sell. I don't exactly know why or what went wrong. I don't know yet if I will grow pumpkins next year or not. I will update this page spring of 2025 when I have decided what I want to do.

Thank you for your business in previous years.

Thank you to all those who bought pumpkins from me this year! I really appreciate it! Due to the freezing temperatures and being past Halloween, I decided it was time to close down the pumpkin stand for the year.

I put away the pumpkin wagons and took down all the signs. New this year, my dad decided I was old enough to till the pumpkin patch with the tractor and tiller. I had already pulled all the garden hoses, sprinklers, and timers and put them away when we harvested all the pumpkins in September so that was one less thing to do.

I hope you have a good Thanksgiving with family!

Pumpkin growing season is in progress for 2023! 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃

We planted white mini and jack-o-lantern pumpkins, orange mini and jack-o-lantern pumpkins, orange giant pumpkins, and some fancy gourds.

In April, we tried planting seeds outside in a cold frame for the first time. It actually worked! 🌱🌱🌱 The plants looked great! (Don't have a picture with the glass on top though.) The weather turned unseasonably warm and we took off the glass so the plants wouldn't die. A while later, we had an unexpected frost and some of the leaves on the plants turned black, but not enough to kill the whole plant.

Memorial day weekend, we transplanted the plants to a small field not knowing what would happen. The next day the plants looked near death. It was so disappointing! 😥 We planted the rest of the seeds in the big field, set up our sprinklers, and left to go camping. We prayed for our seedlings to survive. 🌱 🙏🌱

We came home a week later and our seedlings looked amazing!! 😃 Half of the big field of seeds now had new seedlings. The rest of the field is catching up. The different varieties of seeds are sprouting at different times.

The fields are tilled and hoed and things are off to a good start! Now we just wait, watch, and pray for a great pumpkin season so you have a great selection of items from which to choose!

I am hoping to see lots of new and returning customers this fall! Until then, have a great summer! ☀️

Due to the snow and several nights of freezing temps, we've decided to call it quits on this pumpkin season. The pumpkin signs are down, and the last dozen pumpkins from the trailer are now decorating our house instead. Interesting observation that last year, with a much bigger crop available, all my pumpkins were sold by September 27.

A really BIG thanks to all those who bought pumpkins from me this year!! Despite the smaller crop, I didn't raise my prices. I'm very grateful for what I did make this year which was about 50% less than last year. I am hoping that over the winter my dad can figure out solutions to all the problems we encountered this year so 2023 will be my best harvest yet!

Have a great rest of the fall season including Halloween and Thanksgiving! See you next year!

HARVEST TIME 2022!!

Today was a busy day from morning until well past sunset! We started by putting a new deck on our pumpkin trailer. We repurposed some boards from my old sandbox to use as size/price dividers and as trim around the edge. It looks really nice! I liked using the impact driver, but it sure is loud.

Then we picked the pumpkins. I drove the tractor to and from the field hauling pumpkins which we washed in bleach water to kill any bacteria or fungus that might be on them so they last longer. We sorted the pumpkins by size and interest and priced them. Last, we put up the signs.

This growing season was a struggle. We had many seeds that never came up. Then we had plants that died out for no apparent reason. To fill in all the bare spots in the field, we had a plan to plant seeds in a divided container and transplant the seedlings once they had sprouted. My dad left the container outside and at some point an animal dug all the seeds out of the dirt and ate them. We planted more seeds which were grown in a container inside the house, but by the time the seedlings were planted we had lost over a month of the growing season. Also, my dad tried something new this year that he thought would work even better for w**d control, but it turned out to be the worst season we had for w**ds. It was one bad thing after another!

As a result, I don't have any giant pumpkins this year. None of my white pumpkins or fancy gourds came up. My total supply of pumpkins is significantly less. Literally everything I grew has been put out on the trailer for sale. Our best guess is I will have a 60% reduction in sales compared to last year. It is such a disappointment after putting in so much work.

My mom would like this to be the last year we do this. My dad sees the obstacles as a challenge he wants to figure out and overcome. As for me, I like being a "pumpkin farmer." It gives me something to do, I like earning spending money, and I really like working with my mom and dad, so I am willing to take the bad harvest years along with the good ones.
