One of the biggest mistakes people make with herbs is learning the NAME of a plant but never asking:

👉🏽 WHICH PART OF THE PLANT?

As a Master Herbalist, that question MATTERS.

🌿 TAKE NETTLE.

NETTLE LEAF 🍃 and NETTLE ROOT 🌱 come from the same plant — Urtica dioica — but they aren't automatically interchangeable.

Why?

Because different parts of a plant can contain different types and concentrations of phytochemicals.

Because simply knowing that an herb is “good for” something is NOT enough.

🚨🌿 HERBAL KNOWLEDGE MOST PEOPLE NEVER THINK ABOUT! 🌿🚨

THE PART OF THE PLANT MATTERS.

ROOT. BARK. LEAF. FLOWER. SEED.

They may all come from medicinal plants, but they are NOT interchangeable.

As a Master Herbalist, I don't just ask:

❌ “What herb should I use?”

I ask:

🧠 WHAT PART of the plant am I using?
🧠 WHAT compounds are concentrated there?
🧠 HOW should that plant part be prepared?
🧠 WHAT extraction method makes sense?
🧠 WHAT is the purpose of the formula?

Look at these examples 👇🏽

🌱 ASHWAGANDHA ROOT
The root is the part most commonly used in traditional preparations and modern supplements.

🪵 CINNAMON BARK
That cinnamon in your cabinet? You're using the inner BARK of a tree.

🍃 NETTLE LEAF
The leaf is widely used in herbal teas and preparations—but nettle ROOT is also used in herbalism for different purposes.

🌺 HIBISCUS FLOWER
Those gorgeous deep-red herbal preparations come from the fleshy calyces surrounding the flower—not the root or bark.

⚫ BLACK SEED — Nigella sativa
Here we're working with the SEED, which contains its own distinctive plant compounds and oils.

🔥 THIS IS WHY HERBALISM GOES DEEPER THAN MEMORIZING A LIST OF “GOOD HERBS.”

Different plant parts can contain DIFFERENT concentrations and profiles of phytochemicals.

🚨🌿 HERBAL MYTH ALERT! 🌿🚨

“HERBAL TEA AND HERBAL TINCTURES ARE BASICALLY THE SAME.”

❌ MYTH!

They may start with the SAME plant…
but HOW you prepare that plant can change WHAT gets extracted.

As a Master Herbalist, this is something I want more people to understand. 👇🏽

☕ HERBAL TEA

Tea is generally prepared by infusing or decocting herbs in WATER.

Water is excellent at extracting many water-soluble plant constituents.

Depending on the herb, we may use:

🌿 Leaves
🌸 Flowers
🌱 Roots
🪵 Bark
🌰 Seeds

But here's the important part:

NOT EVERY PLANT COMPOUND EXTRACTS EQUALLY WELL IN WATER.

💧 HERBAL TINCTURES

A tincture uses a solvent—traditionally alcohol, or other preparations such as glycerin-based extracts—to pull constituents from plant material.

Different solvents have different extraction abilities.

THAT'S WHY A TRAINED HERBALIST DOESN'T JUST ASK:

❌ “What herb should I use?”

I also think about:

🧠 WHAT part of the plant am I using?
🧠 WHAT constituents am I trying to extract?
🧠 WHAT preparation method makes sense?
🧠 WHAT concentration is appropriate?
🧠 WHO is going to be using it?

🔥 THIS IS WHERE HERBAL FORMULATION BECOMES A SCIENCE AND AN ART.

Tea isn't automatically “weak.”

Tinctures aren't automatically “better.”

THE RIGHT PREPARATION DEPENDS ON THE HERB AND THE PURPOSE.

🚨 WHY DO YOUR EYES LOOK PUFFY… COULD YOUR THYROID BE INVOLVED? 👀🦋

Your eyes aren't just about vision. Sometimes changes around the eyes can be connected to what's happening with your THYROID and immune system.

One condition I want more people to know about is THYROID EYE DISEASE (TED).

TED is most commonly associated with Graves' disease, an autoimmune thyroid condition. The immune system can mistakenly attack tissues around the eyes, causing inflammation and swelling.
