Red Hmong is an Asian Heirloom cucumber that can be grown in all but the coldest regions of North America.

Red Hmong or Hmong Red cucumbers originated in southeast Asia among the Hmong people of Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, and Laos.

The cucumbers are initially a pale green and morph to a golden orange as they mature. They rarely attain the full deep red color that is shown in some images.

Unlike many other cucumber varieties, they retain a mild flavor even when they are over-ripe. Average size is 4-5 inches.

The flavor is mildly melony sweet with a high water content when ripe. They sometimes have a tart flavor and occasionally are a tad bitter. The bitterness is caused by a substance known as cucurbitacin.

Cucurbitacin is a toxin that plays a role in cucumber disease resistance. The higher the concentration of this substance, the more intense the bitter taste. A very high concentration of cucurbitacin is usually triggered by some environmental stress or Nutrient Disorder and is not recurring if proper gardening practices are adhered to.

When over ripe, it is still palatable and is sometimes used to make “Cucumber Cooler” an unusual tasty drink.

Middle Eastern Heirloom pre-1400. This long pale green cucumber with white flesh is deliciously different. If grown on a trellis the fruit will be long and straight but they will curl if grown on the ground. Fruit remains edible, tender, and tasty at a larger size than most cukes. A relative of the honey dew melon.

The Armenian cucumber is the “zucchini” of the melon family. As the cucumber grows its flesh turns from a tender zucchini-cucumber taste to something reminiscent of the crunch of a carrot and the taste of a watermelon rind. It has a light green color and smooth skin that can be eaten raw and has furrowing (or ridging) along the length of the cucumber. Though it is botanically a melon (C. melo) like a cantaloupe or a honeydew it is used like a cucumber because it tastes like one when it is the size of one.

This variety of Shinney (Vigna unguiculata) peas is nearly extinct we would love for you to help us keep this variety going so we ask that if you are an experienced gardener who shares the same vision please buy these and steward them responsibly. Once the standard for southern peas, this variety is drought-tolerant and will grow in almost all soils. 5 ft. vines produce extended harvests of 7-9 in. green pods. Small seeds are light brown with dark speckles, good eaten green or dried. Grown by Jefferson at Monticello.

This smaller-seeded variety is vining and will climb your corn, but won't pull it down. In a report published in 1912 by the United States Department of Agriculture, "Shinney Pea" aka. Whippoorwill In the 1990s, it was nominated by the Slow Food Ark of Taste Committee for the US South as an ENDANGERED and culturally important variety.
