Beef has long been an iconic and beloved staple of the American diet, from barbecue to hamburgers and steaks. Even as retail prices have soared recently, U.S. demand for beef has remained strong. Yet the U.S. cattle herd, including both beef and dairy cattle, is the smallest it has been in three-quarters of a century. Domestic producers had 86.2 million head of cattle on the first day of this year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data, the lowest number since 1951.

The overall number of U.S. beef and dairy cattle has shrunk to its lowest level since 1951. Drought, rising operating costs and increased consolidation are among the causes.

The KGCSA board met at Cornett Farm Fresh in London after touring the Cornett Farm operation. Board members were able to see the Cornett operation and how they raise produce not just for their own farm store, but other retailers across the area. Cornett's grows strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and other produce. The family operation - Brent, Rhonda, Miranda, Jarrod and his wife Katie - also warehouses, packs and processes produce for other Kentucky farmers.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is signing emergency measures to freeze the state’s sales tax on gasoline starting in July and declare a state of emergency that could lower the tax by 10 cents a gallon starting next week. In a Tuesday press conference, Beshear, said he doesn’t see an end to the ongoing war between Iran and the United States that’s contributing to surging gasoline and diesel prices, arguing the measures would cumulatively save Kentuckians tens of millions of dollars at the gas pump each month.
