From the Maggie’s Collection
Sign located at Maggie’s Downtown.

Interstate 95, for good or bad, plays a large part of the history and fabric of the town of Fredericksburg. It opened through the town on December 18, 1964. Of the approximately 1,906 miles that make up Interstate 95 in the United States only 3.2 miles and one exit (Exit 130) are actually in the city limits. The southern limit is Virginia mile marker 129.2 at Hazel Run and the northern limit is mile marker 132.4 at the Rapppahannock River. This sign used to denote mile marker 130.6 northbound near the Route 3 interchange , was damaged in a motor vehicle accident approximately 10 years ago and was subsequently replaced.

This is going to be a weekly(or so) backstory of some of the many local history objects located at both Maggie’s locations on display for all to see.

From the Maggie’s Collection

This small piece of parchment is probably the oldest piece in our collection and is located at Maggie’s Four Mile Fork. It dates to 1811 just prior to the War of 1812 and the burning of Washington DC. when our country was only 35 years old.

It records the pay from the County of Spotsylvania signed by Jonathon Durrett to two men, George Humphreys and Benjamin Eatherton for 85 hours of patrolling(probably as a sheriff type role) from December 4, 1810 to March 4, 1811. Total pay for each for those 85 hours…$5.31.
Have a great week everyone!
