Egg Roll Call!

The second installment of the Farm to Fam CSA box is going out this Saturday. If you are participating by giving eggs, please drop off your washed eggs in dozen cartons this week.

There is a NEW location this time that will hopefully make it easier. You can drop them off at the Hike Kidz house at 417 north Royal Avenue anytime this week on Wed-Fri, from 9-5.

We also have a few homesteads who need dozen cartons! If you have cartons, please drop them at the same location so we can get the eggs into cartons. Thank you all and please reach out with questions!

Salve & Tincture Workshop

We spent a lovely afternoon together making Echinacea Tincture & Calendula Salve 🌼

As always within our meetings, the conversation flowed with topics surrounding gardening, bees, and natural living. I learned as much from these ladies as I hoped they learned from me! It is such a joy to come together and share our skills so we can all be more sustainable.

Upcoming Workshop!

Next Saturday, I am honored to be teaching our workshop on how to make calendula salve & echinacea tincture. Each participant will go home with each of these versatile plant medicines!

🌼 Calendula Salve: gentle for sensitive skin, deeply nourishing, can be used for eczema, psoriasis, and even a diaper cream! Also a wonderful salve for acne, healing wounds, and as an antimicobial. Calendula is one of the wonder plants!

🌸 Exhinacea Salve: we are infusing the flower into MCT oil (coconut oil that stays liquid at room temp). This is beneficial to help aid in absorption of the plants medicinal qualities. Echinacea supports the immune system, it is rich in antioxidants, and has anti inflammatory properties.

This is a hands on & interactive workshop. Not only will you go home with the salve and tincture, but you will have the opportunity to make your own mini herbal infusion to make an additional tincture at home đź’•

Homesteading History in Warren County, Va

The first homestead in Warren County was built on the land acquired by Robert McKay, Jr. in 1731. This piece of land is still undeveloped today and sits on the corner of Reliance Road and 522 North. The homestead was prosperous and generated all future settlement into Warren County.

The home stood for more than 270 years, until it burned down in 2009. Originally, the town & county planned to move forward to protect & restore any remaining parts of the home, the land, and the spring. Now, there is intent to sell the first land ever acquired in Warren County to commercial developers.

The land itself is special, hosting Passage Creek, a fresh water spring, seeing the American Revolution & Civil wars through their entirety. Furthermore, it represents the very creation of our county and our agricultural roots.

To learn more, here are some historical articles about the land:

Homesteader of Warren County & Early Act Club Gardening Lesson

For the last two weeks, I had the honor of teaching the first-fourth grader Early Act Club about native pollinators & herbs. The kids were able to mix dirt, fill their cups, and plant seeds for their outdoor gardens.

We read about the garden and learned about certain pests & friendly bugs. We donated extra seeds to the club from our recent seed swap. Thank you to all who contributed! It was so special to connect with these curious kids!

February Homesteaders Meeting

Awesome presentation given by Rob DeMariano with Robby Ds Lil Greens. I heard one guest say, “I feel like I’m in a room with a celebrity!”

But with all due respect, Rob has really become such a valuable resource to the agricultural community. Thank you for all that you do for small farmers and homesteaders and connecting us with a wide array of amazing people!

Huge thank you to Catamount Lounge, their staff, especially Julieta Hernandez & Shenan Hahn, truly incredible women. If you’ve never been, it is a must see, taste, and sip on Main Street!

This was a valuable meeting with lots of great resources on growing your agricultural business. If you weren’t able to attend, feel free to connect and send us a message with any questions!

According to a new report from USDA, Virginia lost approx. 400 farms last year (2025). That's slightly more than one farm per day.

Most of those farms lost were small in scale, with sales under $100,000.

Quick note for comparison:

KY lost 1,400 farms
NC lost 800 farms
NY lost 500 farms
OH lost 400 farms
PA lost 400 farms
TN lost 400 farms
GA lost 300 farms
WV lost 100 farms
SC lost 100 farms
MD lost 0 farms

Note: The report clearly states that these are estimates (with the biggest clue being that all the numbers end with "00." The ACTUAL numbers are only measured every 5 years with the Ag Census (2027 is the next one). As far as the procedure for estimating, here is a direct quote from the report:

"Estimation Procedures: In 2025, the modeling effort incorporated historic trends and previous ten years of survey estimates. This stop-gap approach allowed the data series to continue and was roughly consistent with prior year procedures when survey data were available. Estimates were established under secure conditions to protect reports until they were publicly released at preannounced dates and times. Headquarters established national estimates and ensured that state estimates are in balance with the national numbers."

Additional details about the methodology are available at the end of the report.

Our next meeting is just around the corner!

If you’re interested in hearing how to live sustainably with an agricultural business, whether it’s full time or part time, there will be some great tips to learn.

Homesteading nowadays is more than simply living off the land. Many of us have financial obligations that need to be met and doing what we love while offering amazing goods or services to our community is a great way to do so!

What a great way to start the new year!

Our January Homesteaders of Warren County meeting was such a lovely gathering. We chatted about companion planting, made garden plans & vision boards for the growing season. It was so nice to connect with others about what works and doesn’t work in our local gardens.

The seed swap was so fun with elderberry clippings, baby sweet potatoes, and lots of pumpkins & veggies! We snacked on goats milk gouda, pickles from Ruibal Family Farm, and made herbal tea blends donated by Maddox Farms.

Everyone is welcome and we hope to see more new faces in February!

Happy December!!!

This month has gotten away from most of us I think. From family get togethers, to work parties, friend gatherings, and all the festivities it feels like every minute is spoken for.

Because of that, we decided not to host anything this month. We want everyone, including ourselves, to have the space to slow down, refocus, and hopefully find a little rest in the middle of the holiday chaos.

Sarah nor I expected this to take off as quickly as it did and to be honest it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. What we thought would be a slow growing community and events definitely took off running and filled our schedules quickly.
We are beyond thankful for the community and everyone that has been there supporting us!

We hope that through all of this, we’ve given everyone a place to come together. A space where you can share your love of self-sustainability, your skills, your passions, and the things that light you up. Seeing people connect, teach, learn, and support one another has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

Looking forward to the goals we have set for the upcoming year and to share with you guys the growth!

Thank you for being here with us.
